Wow China has shocked me

I thought Aus post was bad having the extra days during the Christmas/new year hols but I forgive them the Chinese New Year starts on the 7th until the 14th but it seems most Chinese manufacturers are already starting to party. I have spent the whole day trying to get some items I need but everyone is sending the same answers no items will be dispatched until after the hols 16th 😞 Looks like I may be taking a break to.

DHL are working until guess when? yes that is right until the holidays start so I am not sure what you are going on about if I could of found someone to deliver I would of had the stuff before the holidays even started.

Demand a country changes where did I do that? I said I am shocked Chinese factories close a week before the holiday starts. I was not shocked at Aussie doing it

And as far as working public holidays I have been self employed most of my life and work 7 days a week 365 days a year so stop the hissy fit all I said is Aussie love thier EXTRA days off for free poor employers have to dish out all that cash for nothing.

PS guess what I spent Christmas day and also New years eve/day doing? that's right working lol

Of course DHL are working up to the CHinese New Year holidays and probably right through them as well.  They are an international company and service the whole world so holidays in just one country are not going to make much difference to their operations.
The holidays would be observed in whatever country they apply but that will not affect their operations in other countries.
Not much you can tell me about being self employed...both my OH and I have been self employed for nearly 40 years and we have also been employers as well.
We don't get paid for holidays.....public or annual, no superannuation, no sick leave, none of the perks of being employed.
Sry should of put DHL China they will be closing for the new year of course not all of DHL will close but DHL China work up to the New year which is what I would expect but seems a lot of the Chinese factories are already closed and a lot closed at the last weekend which is what shocked me. To people who have been importing for a while this is common knowledge it seems but being new I had no way of knowing. Now I know basically China is closed for business during February next year I willknow but this year it has come as a shock to me.

Just looking did not notice the first time China has 17 days Public hols a year if it takes people a week to get home and I assume it will take as long for them to get back to work as well I am surprised China is ever open for business.

I get the frustration of unexpected interruption, but all things considered you couldn't say the factory workers over there A) don't deserve an annual break like this and B) don't make up for it. 😉

You have to remember that when it comes to wholesale, mass production, etc, there's a lot of links in the supply chain, so when one starts to wind down to allow the necessary time for upcoming events, it affects the whole chain so it's generally not workable to try and keep other aspects going.

I am not saying they do not deserve it in fact I believe they more than do what I said it came as a shock to me. Sadly because of being on paypal probation until Monday I have been unable to put an order in earlier I was expecting to be able to get an order in this week before the New year started but sadly that is not the case and I will have to wait until the 15th to put a order in but I am not frustrated just a little shocked really was not expecting it.  As I say Next year I will know but this year it does suck a little.

I got that, it's all good - i.e. I'm not criticising or trying to spur further debate or anything, as I personally get the impression by and large your comments are more off-hand than anything else (I could be wrong, of course, I'm just sayin' I don't get the impression you're all up in arms about it in the sense that you're sitting there thinking they should all still be working away 😛 )

Luckily most of my suppliers issue notice at the start of January and provide 'last day to order' dates etc, so I don't have any excuse for being caught unaware these days, but I can still guarantee you my shopping list is growing longer by the day because even with all the notice etc, by the time things get rolling again there's always a bunch of stuff I didn't expect to sell out and I'll have more than a few 'when are you getting this back in stock???' Qs, which I then have to answer with something that's not much better than 'some time later' Smiley Embarassed Smiley LOL ).

Edited to add: Thankfully I also have Australian suppliers for some of my range, anyway, so I usually concentrate on those during this time, get in a few new items, restock others, etc.

Sadly I did not get any notices and until Monday I did not have a clue they would be closed this week, which is why I was shocked I am relatively green when it comes to importing and in the past most of what I have done has been from the UK and the USA which have similar holidays to here so I have never been caught out before. To people who import regularly things closing a week early may be expected but to me a newbie it came as a shock I really thought they would be open until the weekend lesson learned for me 🙂

We were all new at some point, and it can be a long learning curve, but I learn best from experience - lol, so guess what, I made a few mistakes but think I have learnt a lot along the way - in the scheme of things, it's generally not a big deal to slip up here & there in the beginning and as you get to know your regular suppliers they will do as digi mentioned & give you advance warning.  It can be frustrating though in the meanwhile.   Smiley Happy, but as you have already said, next year you will know in advance.  The boards are generally a great place to visit to gain extra knowledge and ask questions.

I have been self employed the majority of my working life and I dread to think of how many mistakes I have made and totally agree I learnt from most of them a few I think I repeated. Importing is a very new experience to me but something (not sure why) I have wanted to do since I was young and I am sure I will make a lot of mistakes during my journey. To be honest making mistakes and learning from them is one of the things I love about working for myself it keeps you on your toes and learning new things is always rewarding 🙂 I am pretty sure I have learnt from this if not next years post will be titled 'LOL I did it again'

One of my jobs in my (much) younger days was as a purchasing officer & at one time it was heavy machinery from O/seas - something like 6 months shipping time and production lead times on top of that, so timing of ordering was critical but it was a very rewarding & challenging job.  I could be wrong and I'm in no way sufficiently experienced on eBay to be giving advice, but I would suggest, start small, don't outlay large amounts of $ while you feel your way and learn and grow at your own pace - enjoy the journey and all the very best Smiley Happy

I learnt this lesson 2 years ago and was forced to go to holiday mode. I thought I was well prepared this year but man I screwed up... Stock kept going low so I had to fast ship some items... And then it happened another two times. The last one I couldn't make anymore new orders as the supplier were stocked up so I was lucky to find another just a day before they closed. They struggled real hard to find a shipping agent as they were all busy but they did manage to find one and it came in 2 days.

I guess I'll never learn
