do auctions move up the search rankings when they have bids and/or watchers or are they purely ranked based on time ending soonest?

auctions and best match

They rank to how a member chooses to see them.

Ending soonest, cheapest first, newly listed etc.

But unless you change your default setting, which you can, I have mine set for ending soonest, it is defaulted to Best match.

And I think Best match is supposed to show that, based on info entered into the search bar.

However there have been many posts suggesting it's a bit of a mystery as it sometimes seems inconsistent.

Listing with free post would see items higher in searches, I don't know if that is still relevant.

Also here is a little on search results -

It seems that when best match is used, auctions are still listed in time ending soonest format. If you do a search on say "hat" and select 'auction only', display by 'best matc'h you will see that they are all shown in time ending soonest order.

ebay only says (boldi is mine)

Auction format:
One of the factors used by Best Match to sort auction listings is" time ending soonest". Use the auction format when:

You're unsure of the value of your item and want it to sell right away

You have unique and hard-to-find items that could attract demand and start a bidding war

You're currently using auction listings and your items typically sell the first time you list them. http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/searchstanding.html

I never use best match, the only ones i ever use are " Ending soonest " and for big bulky items i am looking at " Nearest "
