non paying buyers

How is it that buyers can bid and win an item and never pay??? Even if I block certain buyers it still happens.  Ive had 4 in 2 weeks that just dont respond to my messages and therefore never pay.  The penalty for not paying for an item is obviously not harsh enough! Getting pretty sick and tired of chasing unreliable buyers and waiting the 4 extra days to relist the items again.  So, the buyers account may get a strike or will eventually be closed and????.....they just create a new account!  The seller cannot leave negative feedback!!! Very unfair considering we sellers are paying the fees!

Its just a part of ebay. Just as sellers pull out of sales where they are not happy with the price the item has been won at, there are buyers who don't pay.

Agree, but then of course the buyer can leave a negative for that non performing seller.

BTW - I don't agree that buyers should get neg's - the strike system works if all sellers follow basic procedure and have blocks in place.

What I would like to see happen is a flag of some sort on a buyers account if they exceed a certain number of strikes - ie 5 should be ample.

I had some jerk claiming his laptop was hacked (possibly by Craig Thompson MP). I could understand if he claimed it was his account. As I put it to him even if his BS was true it was his responsibility.

What really got me going was he  thought it was OK for others to pay a higher price based on his bids and refused to take any responsibility.

I opened up an unpaid dispute willing to take a negative hit just to be able to respond to his feedback.

Unfortunately although I have always found EBay CSO more than helpful helping with these issues, it seems fish higher up the food chain allow buyers and sellers to put up with bad apples.

if you open a NPB, give the buyer a strike, they cannot leave you FB.

As for the comment above that buyers can bid "in any second" during the auction; well, yes, but if they would have heaps of NEGs for non payment and knew that sellers keep canceling their bids, they would snipe, wouldn't they?  The whole point being that NEGs for buyers are useless for busy sellers who do not have the time to check on each bidder on their many hundreds of items, and even if they did, the buyer CAN snipe, so all that effort of removing people with a history of non payment would be only making a mess of their auctions, it would be putting off other bidders, and in the end it would not prevent the clever bidders to snipe despite of bad FB.

That item ended on the 19th MAY so on what date exactly did you open the non payer dispute as that is 22 days ago ?

You know you can open one after 4 days, wait another 4 days, close it & they will be issued with a strike.

So how much longer before you close the dispute & ask ebay to remove that neg that is ruining your impeccable feedback ???

The whole point being that NEGs for buyers are useless for busy sellers who do not have the time to check on each bidder on their many hundreds of items,

***super_nova*** your theory is flawed, according to the doom and gloom posters ebay is finished and nobody is buying anything so sellers should have more than enough time to check out the few bidders they have:^O. Of course if they have hundreds of items the chances are they are selling BIN through a store and if so there must be a large market for crystal balls configured to show the ids of people who may, in the future, click to BIN and then not pay.;-)

As one of the previous posters noted, part of the answer is to adjust your settings so that buyers with multiple non payment strikes cant bid on your auctions. I only get around 2% NBPs on my main account and all items are BINS so don't have blocks on that account. With the auctions I run on this account I get a lot more NBPs and have a block ( in settings ) so that buyers with more than two strikes in the last 12 months cant bid on my auctions at all.  This includes sniping at the last minute. Sure I might miss out on a few bids but if they are time wasters, good ridence, I don't want to be bothered dealing with them anyway. 95% of Ebayers are great people, its the other 5% that cause the problems. Usually serial offenders. I have found this has reduced the problem of NBPs since I adjusted the settings 6 months ago.

The whole point of suggesting that ebay leaves appropriate generic feedback for non paying bidders is not to train the non paying bidders and get them to modify their behaviour.

It is to coerce those sellers who leave negative positive feedback but do not open NPB disputes to actually open and close NPB disputes by seeing other sellers leave the NPB the mark    $   with the comment "Non paying bidder" after a dispute closure and emulating the same behaviour.

If most sellers opened and closed NPB disputes and ebay made the system transparent then the system would work .

One thing I do know the "punitive"  technique that ebay uses to enforce negative positive feedback policy does not work and  causes members to leave the site or at least become disillusioned with the feedback process to the point where they do not participate.

I agree with Juju that penalties are not harsh enough, or even non existent. Yes you can block buyers but others come along. You can check how much fb a potential buyer has but due to the inability to leave neg fb for a buyer all their fb is good, and i believe everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt when they begin. We were all beginners at some point. So it seems to me that sellers have no recourse. I think Neg FB should be reintroduced so sellers CAN see who they are dealing with and perhaps a monetary penalty???? Most eBayers have a Paypal account connected to a bank account. A percentage of the overall cost of the item charged for dummy bids?? I still think eBay should bring back negative feedback for buyers as well as sellers.

It still gets back to the point that if buyers have their settings in place to automatically block bidders with more than two or three non payment strikes in twelve months, the sellers don't have to muck around with serial "time wasters" and the offenders will soon realise their behaviour is affecting their ability to bid. I use it on this account and it does help.
