the ageist statements may put younger buyers off

I've seen some quite ageist comments on these boards.

I wonder if you older sellers realise that it may put younger buyers off just in the same way you may be put off by someone making ageist comments about people in your age group.

As someone who is under 45 I am not racist (as was assumed to be the case when a poster posted what others saw as racist)

I open the doors for people and appreciate when others do so for me .I say please and thankyou when I should.

I try hard to treat others as I would like to be treated and not make ignorant assumptions about anyone.

Not a good look for sellers to so publicly judge all us younger generation in such an all encompassing  negative way.

I am a little confused by the purpose of this thread because I thought the OP was complaining about ageist statements yet she goes on to state

an attitude that could be seen as anti whatever that potential buyer is...in relation to age, race, religion, gender

So the problem is also racism, sexism and religious intolerance.

Maybe the OP might like to clarify what their complaint is because  to bundle all those in together is extremely offensive.

Does the OP mean that if a person is ageist they are also racist and sexist and intolerant of some/all religions.

I am thinking an apology will barely cut it with me, those comments are just too offensive for my liking.

izabsmiling you really need to explain your comment in post #17 as quite clearly you are calling older posters a lot more than just ageist.

Lyndal, no, it doesn't give them a license but there is a reason behind the rudeness. In different situations it could be different reasons. I think if people were at more peace within themselves, they'd find it less important to give a negative thought to anyone else. Young people are often the ones with the most angst.

I do agree. Start living and enjoying life as soon as possible. Over time, you'll most likely mold into the place that you're meant to be. Our actions are basically a direct result of our thoughts.

Oh no!!  Please Bump, don't encourage the OP to explain anything.  We will end up with C&P of reams of information that does not apply to anything.

Have you read some of the threads in CS where the OP has been very active?

I was looking at these boards as a buyer and thinking how they represent ebay as a buying and selling platform (so posts here regardless of who posts them may reflect on ebay as a whole environment). These boards are the first to come up now when the discussion boards are accessed.Maybe there are more readers than in the past?

Someone here said that someone posted to them something about schoolies or schoolchildren being on holidays .That it seems may be seen as less offensive (or not offensive at all?) than them referring to others as cranky old grannies.

It was also OK by other posters to have a go at someone for what they considered being racist and rude .One poster posted that they'd bet they were from gen x,y or z .No one seemed to notice how offensive that post may be to people of those generations...like every generation x,y, or z is racist and rude.

any sort of isms or ists have that potential .

Supa Nova, The Real Estate Agent...I agree that as she was trying to sell something it was as you said stupid to opening display that attitude...it was also rude.I would think it rude too if my Mum went to a RE agent asking to look at properties and they replied that they didn't have any retirement village places atm.

Hi greencat,

'I seriously doubt it would help or hinder my sales in any way shape or form if someone found out  I was 18 or 78, male or female, white or black, etc - sure doesn't cross my mind when I purchase something'.

It's more that if a potential buyer had read posts here and seen an attitude that could be seen as anti whatever that potential buyer is...in relation to age, race, religion, gender ,

that potential buyer could possibly ,as a consequence of what they have read be less likely to purchase from that specific seller. In the same way that sellers can and do add some buyers to their BBL...buyers may think I'm not buying from that seller.

It may help if it is read in context ?

It was offensive to me,  as it came across as my comments meant nothing because i was younger,  or I was being a "young" trouble maker when i spoke out because a whole bunch of comments in a post didnt sit well with me.

I think people simply need to remember boundaries on these boards,  if you want to have a wholehearted disagreement then fine but dont take it to a personal level,     and the includes staying away from comments that involve race, gender, age, politics, religion etc.      I learned never to talk about these things in the workplace a long time ago through my training,   and Ive taken this motto with me throughout life and when posting on boards with people I quite frankly dont know.

Old and young people can be rude we all know that.    But discussion board etiquette  can take a turn when posters get called out on a statement or opinion,  then I guess people  think they can hide behind their computer screen and get personal or pick a different ID and post their rude comments using that-  which ive seen happening ...... but oh well.

The problem is that people often take an offence when none was intended, or misunderstand comment that was not even aimed at them.

I just wonder if my daughter was for instance Asian if we would think that her treatment by the shopkeeper and real estate was racially motivated.  As she is an ordinary white Australian kid with blue eyes, we knew it was just pure stupidity and rudeness on the part of the 2 women.  The shopkeeper lost sale, and the real estate lost not only the possibility to sell us a house, but also to manage  rental property, not to mention that if we are to sell another house, it will not be by them ๐Ÿ™‚
