I am not sure what you mean with the network error if you sent back a physical item? Or do you mean something else (not a physical item)? Or did you receive the error message when trying to contact the seller?

Did you open a case?
Did the seller send you a return tracked postage label?
All the details would be in the dispute, including the return scans, so there would be no need to "inform" Ebay of anything.
