Yesterday morning I was looking at hunting/fishing spotlights on Ebay for an upcoming Birthday gift. When I went to open one advertisement with one of the less expensive models, my laptop went beserk with loud sounds, a blanked out screen then message boxes popping up telling me I had not downloaded some Microsoft updates or something and that my Windows 10 and everything on my laptop would be wiped within xxx number of seconds - counting down - unless I clicked on 'update' immediately. I am not computor savvy, but thought the English was not exactly fluent, so unplugged and turned off my laptop. Tried again later and same thing - but only when on internet - not when doing anything off-line. Downloaded and ran a different anti-virus programme last night and it came up with Ransomware. Prior to this, I had been on my usual Facebook site, checked one email I had sent to a seller on Ebay...and the Ebay as mentioned above. What I am wondering, is it possible to have been infected via Ebay, or could this Ransom Virus have just somehow made its way to my laptop simply by connecting to the internet? I am afraid to keep looking for items now, but will have to take the chance as running out of time for my sons birthday - but need to know if can trust this site again? Thankyou.

I would not know the difference. There was a page of all sorts of items like I was searching for..I clicked on some to reqad details and did the same with this particular one. Had the usual 'buy now' stuff on it like any other page.

I would - exc ept I ripped the power cortd out of my laptop when the noises and message boxes came up. Was right in thinking it meant only harm and wasn't going to give it a chance to do whatever damage it was going to do. Did look for Ebay contact this morning, but only found here.....

Unlikely to be eBay, but now that you're here, please install and run Hijack This. Google it to get the link to download. Once you have run a scan (it takes less than a minute), copy and past the results here.
Open up task manager, ensuring the processes tab is open, and see if there is a dll file using a lot of CPU. The CPU should show at the bottom of the box. Sorry, it's different for Win 10, which I'm not used to. If you are using Win 10, let me know.
Download and install Malwarebytes and Avast Antivirus. Run a full scan on both.
Depending in what you reply with, will depend on what you need to do next.

Thankyou - I will keep this one for future reference just in case. I downloaded AVG and ran that one. It came up with the one virus that said ....JS - Ransom-T[Trj] Microsoft Edge. I have since deleted (emptied) it from the quarantine vault thing. It certainly put the wind up me, so to speak and I just cannot understand where and how my laptop got infected. Thankyou for your assistance.

I ran the Windows Defender Off-line immediately this happened - it did not come up with anything. I dowloaded AVG Free and it picked it up and got rid of it for me. Thankyou for your help.
