eBay Australia Item not received policy April 2023

Hi.

I recently posted an item overseas to Poland, which was listed on eBay Australia.  I am based in Australia as a seller. The item was not received by the buyer. Australia Post tracking updates show it is lost in a Mail sorting centre in Sydney.

I was hoping the item, sold for $532 AU was covered by eBay Australia's "item not received" policy sent to all sellers on 11/4/2023 as it met the criteria for cover (used protected integrated carrier, valid tracking was updated and at least one carrier scan, value no more than $750). I unfortunately did not pay for Aust. Post insurance (instead paid extra for "signature on delivery).

eBay Australia has advised me that as the buyer purchased the item on the eBay UK site, the eBay Australia "item not received" policy does not apply and I lose $ 566.70 AU (item cost and postage)

So my question to other eBay Australia sellers is:

How do you list an item on eBay Australia site and prevent an overseas buyer purchasing the item on their country eBay site?  I'd like to know so eBay Australia sellers who post on eBay Australia site (and are based in Australia) can sell worldwide and still be covered by the latest eBay Australia seller protection policies.

Thanks

Usually it doesn't matter which site a buyer is logged into - if the seller's preferences are set to sell to their country the items will appear on their site - with your postage charges.

The ' item not delivered ' - is not eBay's problem but Aust Post.

You have proof of postage with the tracking & sig on delivery - so you should be entitled to the ' up to $100 ' ( I think ) covered without insurance - through Aust Post - as they have lost it.

It's always a very good idea to charge & take out insurance on valuable items - the value should show on the Customs Dec.

Make sure your selling preferences - to which countries you will post - are set.

The answer you don’t want to hear is unfortunately the answer… You can’t prevent any buyer from being able to purchase an available item on another iteration of eBay.

The distance regulations for online purchases throughout the EU are onerous for sellers. They really should apply only to purchases from and to countries in the EU, in my opinion, but shoulda coulda doesn’t provide any sort of escape clause, unfortunately.

Are the sales you get from overseas buyers worth the risk? If you don’t have an obvious benefit that makes it worth the risk, you may want to exclude certain countries (or more countries if you’re already excluding some) from being able to purchase from you. Bluntly, whatever benefit you get from overseas sales has to be enough for you to be able to cover occasional losses of this sort in order to make the risk factor low enough to justify your personal international sales policy.

The lesson here is that no matter what factor insurance into your pricing for any expensive items. in this case about $20.  for the cost of $20 you would have saved $532.  And as you build it into the price it is not an option for the seller to haggle over
