Import Charges...

Are Import Charges what eBay is calling GST or is it something different?

In the old days, you used to be able to purchase items from overseas without being charged Import Taxes / Duties if your total transactions were below a certain value.

I know we're now being charged GST and had been seeing this in transactions I'd had last year, but this is the 1st international transaction for 2021 and the first time Import Charges have been payable.

Years ago purchases/imports under 1000 didn't get taxed.

Now everything imported carries 10% tax.

There may be seperately import duties for certain items as well.

In your case I would look to see if you are charged both tax and import duty, if not then eBay may have renamed the tax component.

Also keep in mind that if your seller is using the GSP (Pitney Bowes) for shipping, they collect the tax and charge a fee for doing so.

Looking at your invoice, it looks like the 10% tax plus the fee from PB for remitting it to the ATO.

Overseas sellers and shipping agents, who are required to collect and remit GST on behalf of ATO, are permitted to charge any amount they like for doing so.  These charges, additional to GST, are often just invoiced as Import charges.  and has nothing to do with actual import duties.
