Seller wants me to Purchase again at higher price with promise of refund difference

Early September I purchased an item from a seller, which was still not delivered in excess of a month over the indicated delivery window. Tracking implied it has been shipped in early September but no movement after being received for shipping by Australia Post. I waited and waited still nothing, so I requested a refund which was provided by the seller with no issue. A fortnight later the item is delivered.  I reach out to the vendor to arrange for payment.  I stated I wanted an invoiced sale thru ebay so my warranty is protected, they sent a request for direct PayPal payment which I cancelled as the Seller name was nothing like the  Paypal name and this would not have allowed the warranty to be validated against.  I messaged again to the seller, stating I'm happy to pay via an invoice thru ebay, they state this is against ebay regulations (I have been able to do this in the past so was surprised). They requested I purchase the item against and they will imply it is shipped but not ship it. I then checked the listing the item is now $305.95 plus $20.00 postage (mind you the image implies it is free shipping hehe) I paid originally $288.95 Free shipping.  I have noted that they have the listing allowing the make an offer option. So I message back to the supplier about making an offer of $266.95 with the added postage $20.00 bringing my total to $288.95 which was my original purchase price.  They have now asked that I pay the full amount and they will process a refund for the difference.  I feel that I will have no recourse to that refund amount.  Every step of the way I have communicated first to them to arrange the payment for the original purchase price so long as my warranty will be valid but now it is getting very dodgy.  Advice anyone?

As you have been refunded, return the item to the seller rather than bickering about how to repay.  The direct PP invoice would have seemed the most obvious choice.

Then again you can always wait for the seller to take legal/recovery action.

If you paid with PayPal, you can refund the seller the amount you paid. You don't have to rebuy an item.
