I received an email I thought was from Pay Pal stating an amount I had spent with purchaser details and an invoice ID. It had a link to contact paypal with any queries, as I don't usually use links I went to my paypal account myself. There was no record of a purchase for that amount. Is this a new scam?

It is only a scam if you fall for it. I had the same email and just deleted it.

Definitely a phishing come on.
Click on the link and you will get a Paypal lookalike log on which will hand over your passwords to the scammer.

It's a moderately well-worn scam. Been around for a while.

The email I often receive supposedly from Paypal tells me I should update my account details etc.
Obvious scam, but they don't seem to realise it's old hat lol.
Paypal never really email me unless I've enquired about something connected to them first and they're replying.

Genuine Paypal emails (which some of us get often so we keep up with policy changes etc) will always address you with your full registered name. For this reason it's often good to use a version of your name you dont use elsewhere so it's easy to recognise the scam mail when it comes in.
Genuine emails will never call you "user" or "member" or call you by your email address.

Their current Emails is where they tell you that you have money in your account,(so that you will presumably spend it),?:|
They still state that you know it can't be a phishing Email because they send it to your registered Email account and address you by your given name.
They obviously don't keep up with report, etc as any seller will have all that info available if they have been in a transaction with a buyer.
That's the only reason the 0 feedback scammers and others listed,(combined they "sold" well over ten thousand items).
PP then supply their link in two different spots,(which the scammer does to get you to log into a false account),X-(
Stating that members should log in through their own web browser is still the only safe option they should give,:-D
