GST threshold lowered

The Gst threshold is about to be lowered from $1000 to just $20 Are the post office just going to collect the Gst and happily pass it on to the government or add a collection charge on top of it to cover their costs? With the falling dollar and lest an extra 10%+ (and that's been tipped to rise to 15% soon ) on I imported goods certainly going to slow things down .We can expect longer queues at the post office!

Re: GST threshold lowered

How would ebay collecting GST make it a level playing field? Seriously they are not the only selling platform.

Easiest method would be for Ebay to collect the GST on the item price from all items sold on its platform in Australia - level playing field.

So people selling personal items would pay GST on eBay items but not if they had a garage sale? Or a hobby seller here, but not at their local market?

Real level.

Besides it is only being proposed for IMPORTS.

As far as the logistics of collection go, other countries do similar, so I reckon there would be tried and true methods for collection that could be used.

Re: GST threshold lowered

I am basing what is likely to happen, on what has happened in the past, here. Our tried and true method.

I am not averse to paying a GST on imports. In the interests of a fair playing field. I am averse to paying punitive extra costs involved in the handling of imported goods as soon as the GST is payable. I am also put off by the call for GST on imports by multimillionaire businessmen who base their companies offshore and dropship from Asia. That, annoys me.
