My granddaughter wanted a smart watch for christmas so I purchased one off ebay, it arrived just before christmas and when i tried to set it up for her it didn't work. So took two weeks to get a refund so I could buy another one. Bought another one from a different seller - different brand watch too, just received it after it taking three weeks to arrive and lo and behold same problem, wont read the sim at all. Seriously why are these people allowed to sell items that just don't work. Now I have to go through the whole process of getting my money back on this one and it doesnt look good on my account constantly having to ask for a refund.

Same problem with 2 different watches... Are you sure the problem is with the watches?

There is a fair bet you are buying cheap knockoffs anyway. I believe you can get this sort of thing from reputable Australian businesses, where not only will you get a working watch, you'll also get an enforceable warranty.

Were both sellers registered in China?

According to the listing they were in Australia but when i went into their profile after the second watch didnt work it stated they were in China. Normally that would have stopped me buying but i didnt think to look any further than the sale page. I know next time.

Yes I did realise it was a cheap knockoff but i did expect it to work. I've purchased a cheap adult one previously that did work and i know i can get an australian made one but they are hundreds of dollars and they also cost a monthly fee. I didnt expect the cheap ones to last long but i did expect them to work in the first place.

hel_n2,

Read The Economic Costs of Counterfeiting and Piracy.

โThis report shows that the infiltration of counterfeit and pirated  products, or IP theft, creates an enormous drain on the global economy โ€“ crowding out billions in legitimate economic activity and  facilitating an "underground  economy" that deprives governments of revenues for vital public services, forces higher burdens on tax payers, dislocates hundreds of thousands of legitimate jobs and exposes consumers to dangerous and ineffective products.โž

Every time that someone buys a "cheap knockoff", they're contributing to this illegal activity. As you know, Customs will seize counterfeit products coming into Australia when they're aware of it, but so many small personal counterfeits come flooding into the country that it's a major battle. By knowingly buying fakes, you're partnering with the very people who make and sell counterfeits. How do you know that the cheap knock smart watch won't explode because it's made of substandard materials? How do you know that it doesn't contain compounds that irritate the skin and causes rashes?

I don't know how many times I've posted on this, but I expect to post it many more times yet, because people just don't think about what the risk is. You might want to read this post where I mention the law of subrogation and the lower quality components in fakes, and touch on the risks involved.

Why not look at getting a refurbished smart watch that's perhaps a generation or so older than the current one, from an authorised Australian seller of these items? You will then know it's up to Australian safety standards and that it's genuine, and the price should be something affordable...
