How do sellers get away with putting gold filled in the item heading when it is gold plated?

How is it that sellers are still allowed to list as gold filled when in fact they are only gold plated? I know that you get what you pay for, but putting in a blatantly obvious lie and then when questioned about the quality of their product, they said no the item is only gold plated and I should have read the description better. In their description it states how their item is of a better quality because it is gold filled and not gold plated.

Totally agree with your complaint, and it is evident in several listings at the moment where items are absolutely misrepresented just to trap the buyer, then they try to pull the old ''you should read the listing right through before buying''. Well, how are they allowed to contradict their own statement at the head of the listing in the first place. Just press the back button and look for a half decent seller that doesn't need to lie to sell their goods. Also, the pictures should show the actual item you are looking at buying, new or used, I don't care, it's about time this trap of showing a full pic, when it's only a small part from it, is nothing but misleading and attempted fraud.

If you have purchased from this seller, you should open an Item not as Described dispute, if you haven't purchased and can see contradictions in the listing - report them to eBay.

Buyer beware is a very apt warning - there are shonks everywhere and we only have ourselves to blame if we don't take the very basic step of reading a description carefully before sending money off into cyberspace.

Opening an item not as described might only be useful if you can get a Jeweller to state it is not gold filled and supply written proof for PayPal so that you don't have to send the item back if you can get PayPal to agree to your complaint etc.

As it is an Item not as described would have to be returned via Registered/Tracking mail to China which would just not be worth the few dollars the item is worth .

How do they get away with it ? People keep buying it . Some buyers may not know the difference but usually fedback is a good indication as to the quality .

Re: How do sellers get away with putting gold filled in the item heading when it is gold plated?

I have been buying jewellery of late and noticed this too, I have thought about reporting them but I am not an expert in this field and have no proof, I guess it will stay like this until someone has an item appraised and has it in writing usually more hassle and costs more than it is worth to do. Personally I take all those descriptions of gold filled as baloney, then again I only buy fasion jewellery and won't pay anymore than a few dollars for something. Different items or categories on Ebay make me think of Ebay in different ways, for example with jewellery I think of Ebay as a market, the seller will tell you anything you want to hear so you will buy it. Use your common sense this way with Ebay and you may not have to many bad experiences. Also contact the seller ask them is this really gold filled or is it gold plated? That way you have a history with messages that ebay can see that you did your best too find out before you bought the item, you never know the seller may tell you the truth that it is only gold plated. Good Luck!
