I bought an item. Seller offered paypal and d.d.

Hi.

I bought an item for $15.50.  Postage $15.50.  I received a message from seller requesting a direct deposit, not Paypal as the fees were too high and she had been involved in a car accident with a drunk driver (not her) ??!!??  She also asked me to wait for an invoice for postage.  I'm happy with the pre-quoted price (or I wouldn't have bought it)  Am I right in calculating the paypal fees for this transaction would be $1.04?

thanks.

You have no buyer protection if you pay by direct deposit. Don't let the seller suck you in. If the price is correct on the invoice just hit the pay now button and pay by paypal

Completely ignore her request and pay by Paypal. She can't refuse your payment and you'll be guaranteed of receiving your item (or a refund if she mucks you about). As far as waiting for an invoice for postage is concerned, I dunno what her game is but if the listing stated that the item was $15.50 and postage was also $15.50 then send her a Paypal payment for $31 - not a penny more or less.

Her BS about car accidents is also totally irrelevant, and just because she says she had an accident with a drunk driver doesn't mean that it wasn't her fault, either. Good luck. Sounds like you're dealing with a real weirdo there.

Yes, I dont know.  She has many items for sale and 700 or so feedback, so surely she knows how this works!

Oh, I'm absolutely certain she does. As I said, I've no idea what her game is but whenever a transaction starts off like your has, it invariably ends in grief, which gives you the extra incentive to protect yourself and pay only via Paypal. What's her feedback percentage like and does she have many negs?

Feedback is ok.  1 neutral and 1 neg.  She said ebay requires paypal to be a listed payment option?  Maybe the drunk driver is real and she's trying to save $1?  Stupid though, if I sell anything, I prefer to stick to my quoted postage price.  If it's over, I suck it up.

She is partly correct. eBay do require what they deem to be a safe method of payment. That can be PayPal, paymate or some businesses offer their own credit card facility. It is required so buyers have some sort of insurance of not getting ripped off.

It is the buyers choice which payment method they choose from those offered, not the sellers. So, annoying that sellers still try that on.

Maybe she is genuinely trying to save on paypal fees but that isn't your worry, there's no reason why you should put your money at risk by helping her out. It isn't as if she has said-pay via bank deposit and I'll lower the postage, has she!! (and even then I would be wary)

Her wish is not your command.

Just pay via paypal, then message and say you make it a policy to only pay that way as it gives buyer protection.

I presume what she means by the car accident is she is out of pocket with repair expenses. Maybe the drunk wasn't insured. But if she is hard up at the moment, all the more reason for you to use paypal, so she isn't tempted to just keep your money.
