I need some advice on retracting a bid.

I bid on a pair of shoes and have just today realized that I made mistake converting the size.  They won't fit!  The auction ends in about twenty hours and I am the only bidder.  I have contacted the seller and apologized for my error but the seller says there is nothing they can do to cancel my bid and the only way to cancel is via the retraction form.

The problem is that my reason for canceling doesn't fall into either of the categories listed on the retraction form.

Isn't there any other way to put a stop on the sale?

I do understand how annoying this would be from the seller's point of view and I can't apologize enough for that however, I made a genuine mistake.  Surely there is some way to fix it?

Can anyone help, please?

It's better to retract a bid than wind up winning an item you don't want (particularly if that means you won't pay for it). It's better for you and the seller - while technically you are supposed to place a bid for the correct amount if you select 'entered wrong amount' as the reason, I can say that the majority of bidders who retract for  this reason don't place another bid.

Thanks for your speedy reply.

I will try that and hope for the best.

Next time I bid on anything, I will remember this situation and be more careful.

Excuse me I may be wrong but I have cancelled a bid on items in the past so it can be done. Has this change recently???

I must admit haven't done this in the last 12 months....

No, that hasn't changed - in fact the seller would be able to cancel the bid right up until the end of the auction, whereas the bidder can only retract up until the last 12 hours (with the exception of still being able to retract within 1 hour if the bid is placed during the last 12 hours).

OP - I can't see anywhere that you are currently the high bidder, has this been sorted for you? or perhaps you have been outbid?

In response to the question, I personally would honor my bid (unless the price was very high) and then try to resell myself, just to avoid any problems for bidding in the future. JMO ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: I need some advice on retracting a bid.

A lot of sellers don't believe the story of bidding on the wrong item, accidently bidding on an item etc so if they cancel your bid there is nothing recorded against your account whereas if you have to retract your bid you will have a bid retraction showing on your feedback page.

Re: I need some advice on retracting a bid.

The seller is lying as they can cancel the bid at any time while the auction is active.

As they will not do it for you just pick one of the reasons then contact the seller and tell them the reason you picked as there was no option to say seller refused to cancel the bid.

It is better for that than than the seller having to go through a dispute for unpaid item.

The seller is possibly holding off canceling your bid in the hope your bid will attract others.

If another bidder does come along, the final price will be higher thanks to your initial bid - happy seller, and you're off the hook.

Whereas if your bid is cancelled, the price will fall to the starting or any lower bids.
