I received a faulty item and have only received a 50% refund when I should have gotten 100%...

Hello all,

I received a faulty item, sent it back for a full refund

the seller received the item back in the

mail but only gave me half my money back, they sent

me this message...

"Hello. I checked.
We will refund your money using ebay's insurance.
First I will refund half of the amount.
Then you press the button to receive.
Automatically ebay will refund the rest of the amount."

To which I responded...

"This is not working, you said...

We will refund your money using ebay's insurance.
First I will refund half of the amount...

Which has happened as I received a 50%
refund to my PayPal, and then you said...

Then you press the button to receive.
Automatically ebay will refund the rest of the amount...

But there is no button to receive, the money automatically
went into my PayPal without any way for me to get the 50%
still owed to me!
What is going on? I want the full amount now!"

At this point I only have a 50% refund when it should have
been 100%, and I have no idea what button/process they
are referring to, does anyone know what they are talking
about or what I should do next?
Thanks.

I agree, but their feedback is actually quite good, nearly 500 reviews with only 6 neutral, and they have been a member since 2021. I tried to sort it out out of courtesy but also initiated eBay's Money Back Guarantee simultaneously.

Ah actually,  12 neutral and 5 negative out of 262 in the last 12 months.  I'm glad you think thats good

What I read is that you previously made no reference to the MBG.

If, as you claim, you had used it, the seller would not have been able to refund 50% unless you accepted it.

Not sure about Japan, but in Australia and many other countries a seller has no access to a buyer's email address, and can't refund via Paypal. Everything goes through eBay Managed Payments.

And they also said that the return was arranged by the  seller,  and when the seller offered the 50%, they used the MBG.  Different stories

I contacted them first and after they said to return the item is when I activated the MBG. I was confused as to how they were able to do a 50% refund without me authorizing it (something I would never do, it's all or I take further measures), I am confused of just how this was able to happen in the first place. Also what would they have to gain doing only 50% when eBay would do the other 50% after the claim?... It is a very strange situation!

Sperry, I mean I initiated the return through eBay, which I think is part of the MBG. But please correct me if I am wrong!

The seller asked for a return, and so I went into the item and used the return item option, not different stories, just a long story!

Totally different to opening a case through the MBG.

You are lucky eBay sided with you.

In future if something is not as described open a not as described case. That is the MBG.

No, you're missing the point, everything was ok until I got a 50% refund out of nowhere. To send the item back I used the eBay system. My original post was about the seller only refunding 50% and how was that possible when I did absolutely nothing to allow that. I got a message from my PayPal saying I had gotten a refund, when I checked it, it was only half the amount due. THAT is when the strangeness began and I hit the button "have eBay step in" or whatever it's called. I OKed nothing, I don't know how they even did that or what the reason would have been, it was very strange!

I know this is old, but everyone replying is completely missing what really happened, so many people are so confident in their ignorance. Most likely scenario is that the seller is either top rated or offered same or 1 day shipping and free returns. In both of those situations the seller at their discretion can issue a partial refund of no less than 50% for items not returned in the same condition as they were sent out. Seller used that extra eBay feature but put in way too much extra effort sending the message as well. With eBay, unless you really did something wrong as a buyer you can 100% get a full refund eventually if you fight hard enough.
