Increasing Maximum Bid when I am the only bidder

I am the only bidder on an item. If i increase my maximum bid will this increase my initial bid as well?

I want to add another bid in case someone else bids but i obviously don't want to increase my first bid if noone else bids.

No it wont, if you are the only bidder, you will win the item with your first bid, as long as it was at the starting price that is. The only time you will go to your maximum bid is if and when another bidder comes in and goes above your first bid, and so the process goes on.
