When one pays for an item by a means other than paypal,eg bank transfer, who marks the item as paid in the summary? Me, the buyer, when I do my bank transfer, or the seller when the funds clear?

For payments other than paypal, the seller can but doesn't have to mark the item as paid when they have the funds. The buyer can mark the payment as sent.
Paypal payments are marked as paid by ebay when a payment is made or very soon after.

so the answer is both really - it is helpful if the buyer completes checkout and then marks the item as paid - particularly as the ebay postage labels don't work if checkout is not completed.
So then the seller can see an hourglass payment,
Then when it clears, the seller marks it as paid - and then the buyer can see payment has been received. Makes for good communication I reckon without the need for emails.
