Hi E1,
Am I able to get PP buyer protection for a non-eBay item if the transaction states exactly what the item is?
For example a good, working swiss made wrist watch with model number ***** for $500.
With no cracks or faults.
If I even use my credit card for added protection I should still be covered right?

I'd recommend a good, in depth read of the applicable PP policy.
My last read basically indicated (based on my interpretation) that I was effectively covered for only eBay purchases but, I know they have changed it to cover Gumtree purchases. I understand that the Gumtree purchases have to be carried out in a very specific manner to qualify though.
As for buying a Swiss watch of that value I'd suggest you be pretty well informed in advance and satisfied beyond any doubt that it's the real thing before parting with your money. Most good Swiss manufacturers have a facility for checking the serial number (email generally). If the Seller will provide the serial and allow you time to verify it, I'd say you're pretty safe but, always check it regardless of how honest the Seller appears.
And if the price appears far too good to be true, it nearly always is too good to be true.

Buyer Protection applies to any and all payments for eligible goods.
The invoice or payment just needs to reflect that it's a payment for goods (so, not a personal payment / gift), and you need to log in to your account to pay, not use PayPal as a guest (from memory, this is the only clause that is different to eBay - I thought it was universal, but from what I understand, buyer - and seller - protection applies to guest payments via eBay's checkout, but if via any other method or website, you have to log in).
Eligible goods are the same on and off eBay (eg things like gift cards, cars etc don't have PP protection at all, custom made items are eligible for not received but not eligible for not as described, pick up items are eligible for not as described but not eligible for not received).

For sure read up on the terms & conditions of paypal but I was covered for a non ebay purchase.
Some time back, I paid for 2 x $40 vouchers to make photobooks. I bought the vouchers direct from the company website & paid with paypal.
A few weeks later when I went to use one of the vouchers, I could not find the website and luckily discovered the company had gone into receivership.
I was just in time to put in a paypal claim and I was fully refunded about a week later.
So my belief is you would be covered under quite a few circumstances, but do check everything out-both paypal conditions plus the seller- before buying because it is very stressful when things go wrong, wondering and worrying that you might not get the refund.
