So many people complain, or call people "trolls" if their feedback is set to private.
They assume, you have no idea what you're talking about, therefore, shouldn't have to the right to voice an opinion.
Why don't eBay just remember everyone's number from showing on the boards? Just have our usernames and "show listings" viewable.

Sorry do people really go through and try and interfear with someones sales just because of something said here. Thats a shame because everyone should be able to speak there opinion.
One would hope people buy of people based on good service not what they say on a disscussion board.

Yes Belinda, it has been known for sellers to have their auctions interfered with or their feedback trashed, which is why many sellers use a posting ID on the boards and buyers prefer to have Private feedback.

and that's just the nice stuff!
There is the occasion where someone was sent bodily waste (can't remember if it was dog or human), when someone else's house was put up for sale, other posters found that house on the internet and then passed pictures around from it and made public jokes about the contents of the pantry - i.e. alcohol left over from the gathering after the spouse's funeral meant that because there was alcohol in the cupboard that person must be an alcoholic.
Another poster, well known for their Christmas light display, had someone ring the authorities one year and complain about the safety of their display and have their display shut down.
that's just a few off the top of my head

The number of sellers that post on these forums with their real selling accounts is in the majority by a country mile.... the proof is in the numbers, the red doors and the feedback on those accounts that you can see posting.
The anonymous accounts have shrunk in numbers from an overwhelming majority when I first started posting in here in 2004 ... and "that" advice (posting id) was a sticky on the top of the old chinwag/round atble threads to the minority that are still here.
The "use a posting id" advice was removed in 2006 ... but the legacy remains

Yes, someone came here asking why they couldnt contact a member? After going through a couple of possible reasons, I noticed they'd left a considerable amount of neg feedback and suggested that if it was one of those sellers they may have blocked him. He took exception to that and bought about $1000 of my stuff with the intention to leave neg feedback.
Luckily ebay dont allow buyers to leave neg feedback for powersellers for 3 days (I think) so he left me positives with horrible comments. They were removed within an hour of me ringing ebay.

Actually, whilst the official notification may have been removed (I wasn't around in 2006) Janice the Mod from the ausmod email addy advised me to not only acquire a specific posting ID, but also to set it to private - about a year or so ago? Not sure - whenever this account was started.

Forgot to hit the quote button. That was in reply to the question "For those of you who post with your selling ID's, have you had anything negative come from that? Any "retaliation" etc?"

unfortunately, many people come here asking questions that cannot be answered without knowledge of the poster's buying history. I personally hate going through people's FB received & left, and looking at the items they bought - I often end up buying something 🙂 I would much preferred if all the relevant info was truthfully given in the OP, but you would not expect somebody to come here and say: "I have left whole heap of NEGs for sellers, do you think that it is the reason some now blocked me?" Not to mention those people who come here complaining about INR, only to see that the poster has left large proportion of FB for INR or thanking sellers for refund.
I basically decided that I am not going to be wasting my time trying to advise people who do set their IDs to private, unless it is a straightforward eBay rule question etc.

If I needed a question answered about a specific listing or situation that was better served by having all the information visible by other members I'd most probably use the ID in question. That's if I was happy to have certain members also trawling through my info to find out irrelevant information like what purchases I frequently make, where I live and what not. And since I'm not happy about that, I'd most likely not bother to ask!
But then, it's also possible that the regular posters here who use private IDs are perhaps more experienced with ebay and therefore are less likely to ask questions than others. Or perhaps less likely to ask because they see on a very frequent basis how quickly it is to get cut down, chastised and given a good tongue lashing here! It'a pretty much as likely as getting actual good advice!

I wouldn't ask a question here on my primary ID. Been there, done that. Although I probably deserved the responses I got, it did smart at the time. Now I'm older and slightly wiser, I answer rather than ask. In between I read the site map and read threads about issues I was interested in.
It's amazing how much information the boards provide, even without putting oneself in the firing line. Given there are probably less than 10 questions that use up 95% of the threads. If those questioners did what I did, they wouldn't need to ask questions - generally the answers have already been provided.
