I have just paid $8000 for a car that I dont think exists. It was advertised on a few regular car selling sites and I expressed interest in a vehicle and I got what I now know is a typical story about someone being in the military etc. I already sent the money. What can I do about it please? Contact my bank as I made the payment by Visa? I am really panicked as the money only got sent last Thursday. Thanks

Good luck with your bank... however I fear your money is long gone.
You are right the car does not exist... however the to good to be true price enticed you give your money to a complete stranger.

Thank you for your insightful great advice. You are really clever to think of all that.

How did you go with the bank? I am hoping you had some luck.
Apparently this scam is, as you say, quite common. I read that a lot of car ads are not what they seem and if a seller gives some reason why you can't see the car in person, be suspicious. The car itself probably does exist but the photo has been copied from a real ad where the asking price was probably higher.
You must be feeling sick because that is a lot of money to lose and I hate to see scammers get away with this sort of thing.
The bank is probably your only hope because although ebay has money back guarantees and paypal has protection too, I am pretty sure that certain categories are exempt and motor vehicles would be one of them.

Hi, can i ask if you've managed to get back your money. Recently happened to me as well and i'm pretty new here from a overseas country. Dropped 6k on a hyundai i30 and was wondering if the bank could get the money back. My case was a westpac to Nab account.

The bank can only get your money back if you paid by credit card, if you didn't use a credit card then I'm afraid you've lost your money.
But go into your bank branch anyway and see what they say.

What part of this looked remotely real?
It has been around no less than 12 years, widely reported as being a scam far and wide
People still happily go along with what surely must ring alarm bells
Why?
Why why why
Even if someone is going to say they didn’t know ….. what part of the utterly bs story line sounds like maybe there is really a car?
