When trying to buy stuff like accessories for our cars and when I try to research feedback for the parts I always see the sellers have everything as Private and I thought they could only do that with approved personal/pharmaceutical items.
That should not be allowed to those who sell electronics and gadgets
I see feedback like, Great Lights and see the item set as private, or "Works well with my iPod" also set as private..
How do you research the quality of sold items if everything is set as private......

You can't find out what the item was or what was the final price paid when the seller uses a Private Listing.
It is not against the rules although it is not really in the spirit of Private Listings.

If I'm looking for something and sellers have items listed as private and they have at least 2 negs then I
message the seller and let them know that they've missed out on a sale and others wont trust them,(as
it could be the item that I was looking at that they got a neg for).
I've had messages back from sellers being adamant that they were left in error and it stated so in the
comment,(when it was pointed out that I can't see those comments then I've had comments that they are an
honest seller so I pointed out that no one can see that only them).
Only a couple have gone back to normal listings.
Most of the ones I've messaged have stated that they don't want others to see what they buy,(so they put
their own listings up as private).
As Lyndal said it's not why that feature was made available as buyers can set their feedback to private,(it's
mainly there for sensitive items and IMHO it should be something that could be added by the seller prior to
someone buying it,not from the start),
That way if it's a present it wont show on their feedback,(people would be reluctant to buy on eBay if they
know that the recipient has an eBay account and can check their feedback).

Yea, maybe I should start msging them and tell them they missed a sale because of it, also maybe Ebay should restrict the private listings to certain categories ..
There are so many fakes and bad quality stuff out there, how is the buyer suppose to know what is what if they can hide everything, its bad that Ebay allows it and making it so that they cant use it will help lower the disputes with paypal too..
I see complaints from buyers who bought junk only to be told to research the items first, pfffft

taipan,
for the life of me I can't see what's with this obsession with feed backs!
Especially these days when due to Ebay's policies of "Buyers are always right, feedback in general has been rendered a joke, as well as useless. Even articles in the print media abot it - so heaps of people would have noticed the same thing.
What do you people do when you shop on other sites where you can't leave f/back, or there isn't any to "check out" from previous shoppers. Or, those who rely on f/back so much - don't they ever shop anywhere else?
Genuinely curious.
Few times I have bought stuff from people with several negs it was always just fine - but what's the worst it can happen if you really want something but "can't see f/back for previous purchases" - big fat zero can happen to you as a buyer!
With all the protections set by Ebay as well as PP - and ease with wich the claims are made (even fraudulent ones where they fabricate faults with the greatest of ease just because they can), the worst it would happen you get your money back - and start again.
And of course, some will say: "Oh, but what about all my wasted time" Big deal. NOT
We all waste time sometime or other even in real shops. I have lost count how many times I have spent whole day shopping and came back home with nothing.
The only times I seem to spot something are those ocassions when I don't have any money! And by the time I do - it's gone - always the same outcome.

This thread has nothing to do with what you are asking...you should start a new thread to ask your question.
There is nothing you can do after all this time unless you paid with paypal funded by a credit or Visa debit card.....then you may be able to initiate a chargeback, depending on the time allowed by your bank.

As Lyndal said, start a new thread, don't hijack one that has nothing to do with your problem.
You might be able to open a not received dispute in PayPal, but there may have been too much time passed for that. It wouldn't hurt to check anyway. In future, don't let it go so long before doing something about it.
