Buy Buy Afterpay, it was nice knowing you , hello credit cards and another ripp-off by the new government ! This is supposedly to protect the consumer from over endulging lol . Hmmm doesn't seem like the government wants to regulate how much we spend at the pokies 😉

People were over-indulging and gambling long before credit cards etc, were invented.
Every person is responsible for their own life choices. At least that's the way I've always looked at it.
If a person is determined to over-spend, there is nothing on this earth that will stop them finding a way (and often blaming everyone else except themselves).

Oh yes, of course
The new government is responsible
Funny I thought this was Australia, where adults make their own choices
Adults have no responsibility to either control themselves or get help for their spending addiction if they can’t

I don't use it, but I can still see Afterpay at checkout, just as I could see it some time ago when some people were asking why they could not see it.

Well, firstly, it’s Bye Bye! 😉
….a good rant is never taken seriously when the wrong spelling is used!
Secondly…. At some point, each and every one of us, needs to take responsibility for our spending. … Need over Want!
To be blaming the Govt is hardly a solution, is it? Please enlighten me on how the Government is to blame for eBay removing afterpay? (I didn’t know afterpay was being removed, as I don’t use it). But, like other members here, afterpay still comes up as an option for me at checkout. 🤔
Lastly, if you were really THAT CONCERNED about it, you wouldn’t be here having a whinge, you would be actually doing something about it, through the right channels, talking to those whose job it is to actually listen to these little dummy spits. And that place ISN'T the eBay discussion BUYING board! 😏

OK, I had a look because I had no idea...
This is the first article I have found about the OP's "problem":
Well, at the end of the day I think it really is for the protection of customers. Getting deeper and deeper into debt is not funny. And if people are unable to pay back, their account would be suspended anyway, so they are just trying to be stricter before this happens (so that it does not happen and the whole experience is less frustrating and unpleasant).

Nor the 8 other times they have dragged up ancient threads to copy and paste the same tanty

It’s my understanding that afterpay is no different to in-store ‘buy now, pay later’ options.
Still, people abuse it, then whinge when they lose it.
I still have afterpay come up at checkout. I checked this morning but for some reason, I am unable to add pics this morning. The App keeps freezing.
(it obviously wants me to try now, try again later) 😂
Have a great day, folks 💋

I just added a random item to my cart and took a screenshot:
Could it be that it is disabled in some accounts because people still have to pay some instalments?

Yep, that’s exactly what I did. I managed to upload it using my mobile phone, but my iPad isn’t playing nice, today, I don’t know why.
I’m thinking on the same lines as you mate, that they’ve already exceeded their afterpay line of credit, or aren’t repaying the amounts on time, or they have too many afterpay loans open atm.
Either way, there would have to be a valid reason.
I am a pay cash up front now, gal. I don’t have a credit card anymore (terrible things) and I don’t lay-by either. It’s pay in full, or save up until I can pay in full.
