I was looking for a certain AU seller, went to advanced search.
It took me to a seller in the states, not the well known australian seller.
I clicked on them wondering if they were the same seller. No they weren't .
I didn't bother looking further, went to Face Book for a bit then had my tablet sitting on my lap untouched and powered down.
Came back an hour later and I received this message, "You bought this item" Please pay now.
It $695.49 plus post from US !! Yikes how did that happen.
First of all I would never buy a piece of jewellery like that.
Then I would have had to click the "Buy it now " button, then go to the page and click confirm button.
None of that happened.
I messaged the seller explaining my confusion and have asked for a cancellation.
Has anyone heard of this before? Strangest thing I have ever had happen on ebay yet.

I agree, it wouldn't hurt, but tbh i can't see it being an account hack. The account just happens to get hacked at the exact same time it is watching the exact same item the hacker then buys? That's one heck of a coincidence. If it was open on an unknown/unsafe website looking at an ad there, then you might believe the page was somehow booby trapped, but this was an ebay page so...
I'm an auction buyer primarily and rarely ever buy via Buy It Now, so I can't remember if the BIN button & confirm button appear in the exact same spot. Does anyone here know? Also, if the cursor is hovering over BIN and if (instead of clicking on the tab) you press enter twice, will that cause the BIN to be selected + then confirm too?
OP, what I'm wondering is if whilst you were transitioning to your facebook page there might be some way you inadvertently double tapped whilst the cursor was still active on the listing page and thus managed to hit both the BIN tab & confirm. Is there some small BIN item you were planning to buy anyway that you can try this out on? If so, open the listing for the item with the cursor over the BIN tab, and then try to recreate what you did previously when going onto facebook, and see what happens. Might be worth a try.
You're right though, very strange thing.
PS, You didn't happen to buy the tablet off that same seller did you?

Grrrr, curse my flipping curiosity.
I couldn't help myself, I went and looked at what it was that you had 'purchased'. It just had to be an antique estate sale item didn't it? And especially something like an old brooch that someone now deceased might have been very attached to.
I watched a particularly spooky horror movie lastnight called Oculus about an antique mirror bought from deceased estate. The mirror was possessed by demons that amongst other things were able to manipulate humans that were nearby and get them to see or do whatever the demons wanted, including getting them to operate machinery, electronics, etc without them even realizing they were doing it... you know, like going on the computer & buying something on ebay without their realizing they had done it.
So after watching that movie just lastnight, I read your OP this morning about how you somehow mysteriously bought a spooky looking antique brooch... OH HELL NO !!!!

These are my thoughts too about hitting the button twice.
I decided to do a back space of each page, so from pay now it went back to the item page then back to the advanced search page.
Nothing in between, not sure if this is normal so you can't buy the item twice?
I noticed it also had "Make an Offer", I never buy it now if I can make an offer.
In the realms of possibility, yes it could happen.
In the realms of probability, can't see any alternative.
In the realms of you 2nd comment, I'm not even going there! ( the scary movie one)
I feel sorry for the seller, he has 100% positive FB and probably woke up to fine he has a $600 sale.
I feel sorry for me as I might get a strike out of this.
And to make it all the more regrettable, I was looking for shampoo & conditioner from the AU seller, not antique jewellery, which I am definately not into.

Don't do that if ever it's a BIN with multiple items available or you will end up buying it twice. I've been there & done that.
LOL in the circumstances you should at least watch the movie though... Oculus (2013)

All's good now.
The buyer has just agreed to cancel the transaction.
Now do I get a strike for this?
He put the reason for the cancellation is the "buyer bought by mistake", which I guess is as close as we could get.
So I agreed and have now cancelled.
Will probably never know what happened, but glad I had an understanding seller.
Thank you all for your helpful comments and suggestions ( except the scary movie one) LOL.
Regards Marion.

You would only get a strike if the seller opened a NPB and won, the reason they stated buyer bought by mistake, I imagine, would be to protect themselves from a defect.
Glad it all worked out for you.
You can't please all the people all the time, so now I just please myself
