Warranty on used item

Hi Guys, just curious, i was looking at buying a USED PlayStation 4 Console, its 4 years old and he has in the subtitle " 12 months long warranty " . I have messaged him but no communication, can you have a 12 month warranty with an item 3-4 years old and being sold as used, confused by it, thanks all.

Warranty on used item

I suppose it depends on who or what company is selling it, but if it isn't a large commercial store then no, I wouldn't trust the warranty information.

Second hand items sometimes do come with a genuine warranty but you'd also want to know exactly what that warranty covers.

If the seller isn't replying to messages though, I would not be having a lot of confidence in the ad.

It wouldn't be a manufacturer warranty (which is what is supplied when you purchase a new system), but a supplier warranty (manufacturer warranties on Playstations are provided / paid for etc by Sony, supplier warranties are provided by whoever is selling it, typically they offer the same deal such as replacement or repair if the unit fails and not due to misuse etc - eg Cash Converters have 30-day warranties on a lot of their goods, and it just means you can take it back within that timeframe and get a refund or replacement, which in most cases you'd have a right to do with or without that warranty, anyway).

Warranties are voluntary, no business ever has to supply them, and in the vast majority of cases they offer very little above and beyond your consumer rights, but as springy mentioned, on a SH item the chance it would be honoured if needed can be quite low, and almost impossible to enforce (particularly if the seller is  not a registered business, where a complaint can be filed etc since registered businesses have obligations to meet in regards to consumer rights, but getting a warranty honoured beyond the timeframe where you have official recourse is notoriously difficult to impossible in a lot of cases, so unless a very well-known, reputable business, take any and all references to warranties with a big grain of salt - dismiss them entirely if the above applies [i.e. they're not a well-known, reputable business] and the seller is located overseas).

Unfortunately, many sellers put this wording as a way to attract buyers, but it's usually not worth anything unless it can be backed up by a reputable business behind the Ebay store name.

Some bricks and mortar stores do offer warranties, but even places like EB Games has a limited time warranty, such as 90 days, so a 12 month warranty on such an old item is definitely suspicious. Even worse is that the seller is not responding as they do not want to admit that they cannot back up this warranty.

I would avoid.
