Weird goings on with PayPal

Earlier this month I ordered some trading cards. When I got to the confirm payment page I decided to go and look and see if they had anything else I could buy and get them combined so I went to the eBay homepage from a bookmark and had a look (obviously a mistake)

There was nothing I was interested in so I went to my Purchase History and paid for the cards. Then I see in red that all details could not be shown but I had received an email confirming my order, one from PayPal saying I had made a payment and another from the seller confirming the payment..

This is where it gets weird... A day later the payment has been refunded back to my PayPal account.

I messaged the seller and asked what was going on, he said he didn't know why the payment was refunded and then sent me an invoice to pay with PayPal which I did..

I hadn't heard anything from the seller so I sent them an email saying that I had paid for the cards via the invoice. Still hadn't heard anything back so just now I sent another message asking them if they had received the money and asked when my cards would be sent...

I checked my PayPal account just now and there is $2.64 sitting there which is the total of the cards that I had bought off the seller..

When I look at the transaction details of the invoice it says that it has been paid and the email I received from PayPal confirms this..

Can anyone explain what has happened? I assumed that the money automatically gets taken out of the PayPal balance before using the Bank Account option, and as the money was sent directly through PayPal I assume that this is what happened..

Weird goings on with PayPal

all details could not be shown

That usually shows on a friday afternoon or evening during maintenance.

Looks like the gremlins got to it.

If you had zero in PayPal and paid first time, then it's taken out of your bank. Then with a connection problem (fri arvo) it's refunded but goes into PayPal until you transfer it. Next time you pay, it will also come from your bank account because that amount was a refund and was probably not cleared to be used yet.

If that makes sense.

That's my guess anyway. ๐Ÿ™‚
