I bought an item which was faulty when I received it, and the seller asked me to return it. My question is, who pays for the return shipping and the shipping of the replacement item?

What is the seller saying?
In an ideal world, the seller would on all counts. However, if it is a faulty item, it will ultimately be up to you to pay return shipping iof the seller does not offer this. As for replacement, again, up to the sellers discretion, as in general, a PayPal claim of SNAD will see you requested to return item at your expense by trackable post and upon receipt a refund will generally be issued.
What allowances do the sellers terms and conditions state?
IMO - do not return anything to anyone without a directive from PayPal
If you return an item without direction from PayPal, there is nothing stopping the seller from keeping the item, failing to replace and refund,

Thanks for your help.
In the end I paid for shipping to return item, and seller paid for the shipping for the replacement.
