Why am I paying import charges for a $A50 item?

I have just been charged import charges for an item from the US. I was of the belief no import charges are applicable for items less than $100.

It used to be under $1000 but that changed some years ago.

10% is now payable on all imports except for those exempt.

10% GST applies to all imports + postage,  international sellers or shipping agents who are required to collect and remit GST on behalf of  ATO, are also permitted to charge any additional charge they like for doing so and any such charges are commonly invoiced as import charges.
