I've heard this eBay urban myth about "importing knives" numerous times and it's a complete crock of poo circulated by no life forum junkies who have no life outside of eBay other than to post absolute dribble.
Knives ARE NOT a prohibited import.
Specific types of knives are restricted or prohibited (the nasty types).
Here is the ACTUAL rules pertaining to the importation of knives....As you'll note NO RESTRICTIONS on kitchen knives, butchers knives, hunting knives, fishing knives, or even butter knives.
The problem is PITNEY BOWES, not AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS.

Daggers and throwing knives/blades/axes require written Police Certification (B709B Form) from the relevant Police Firearms Registry, prior to the arrival of the goods in Australia. All other knives require written permission to import from the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, prior to the arrival of the goods in Australia.
