If it is a Pick Up item then CASH ONLY. As you can inspect and determine if it is OK before you pay.
There is no buyer (SNAD) or seller protection with Pay Pal on pickup items.

When I have purchased pick up items I mainly used paypal funded by credit card (debit)for a couple of reasons:
Creates a 3rd party electronic record of that transaction occurred, and if for any reason I had to pursue any issues that may arise with the purchase I then have more reliable proof that purchase was made.
For business / taxation purchases - provides superior proof that a payment was made when compared to an order form / or invoice with cash received handwritten on it.
I have a level of consumer protection via my banks card insurance coverage in a situation where I had inadvertently purchased stolen goods.
Consumer organisations including State Governments Office of Fair Trading actively promote paying via safer means such as credit card or paypal.
Personally I rarely make payment for goods sight unseen if I was going to pick up or have courier collect on my behalf- I would make payment only after inspection and pay via phone at the time.

Better for whom?
Seller: Cash better.
Buyer: PayPal better.

Not really for a pickup item.
As has been stated over and over and over and over again, there is no protection for either party through Paypal for a pickup item.
There are those who advocate using Paypal as a buyer, backed by a credit card, in order to claim down the line if they don't do their due diligence at the time of sale/pickup.
I would strenuously defend myself against such buyers.

I am a seller, and I have been a huge ebay buyer in the past - (before I took my dollars elsewhere in protest of the disgraceful and business wrecking fee hike on auctions).
Not fazed as a seller if someone wants to pay via paypal for a pick up item. For more expensive items I trade in, I do not expect anyone to rock up with wads of cash.
Over my years on eBay i have only ever had a couple of chargebacks for low cost items - I think those kind of odds will mean that at the most I may get one credit card chargeback on a pick up item in the next 5 years, and I will fight that battle with the bank, if and when it occurs.
Overall, I have lost far more in $$$ on auctions listing fees due to non-paying bidders than credit card charge-backs
