Why are you asking the same question twice?  It's called sniping - generally it is bidding once, late in the auction, at the maximum you are prepared to pay.  It has a few advantages: it is a good defence against shill bidding and prevents one getting engaged in a bidding war.  You can do it live or use a third party programme to place bids on your behalf.

You are referring to snipe bidding.  Most experienced ebayers bid in the last few minutes of an auction.

There are programs that will place the bids for you but a lot of us do it manually.

Re: bidding

Have to say that the best thing about the phone app is my ability to bid with 2 seconds to go, to avoid a bidding war if needs be.

Just can't risk it leaving it to the last on my computer, the internet & ebay = glitchy.
