global shipping program is MAD!

I can't be the only one who feels like the global shipping program is wildly expensive. Shipping from the states has always been expensive but it's starting to get ridiculous. If the seller doesn't enter the exact size abd weight small overages result in massive increases in cost. More than one I've ordered identical small items, done costing $25 more than the other for no explicable reason.

A small camera lens adapter in a container the size of 4 matchboxes and around 100grams cost me $45usd. It was shipped by the GSP through Fedex and the cheek of these people...after about a week last Monday morning the tracking said it was at adelaide airport but the estimated delivery date was Friday 6pm. Assuming the Friday delivery was a glitch I rang up to ask if I cloud pick it up since I would be nearby anyway. They were helpful and said I could. As I was leaving I asked about the Friday delivery, the guy behind the desk said that yes even though it was here and ready they were going to hold it for 4 days before delivery because it was a budget service!

In addition to all that when you search for things, particularly from the US you get the current item price plus the shipping price underneath only to find when you go into the items actual page that the estimated price is actually much much more.

I wish they would kill this GSP or at least make it easier for US sellers to also offer regular first class and priority shipping because it's starting to get crazy.

I'd be curious to hear all of your stories, I'm surei can't be the only one.

But the GST will still be paid.   All the drop shipping services from the USA are treated the same as ebay and the GSP and collect GST on shipments to Australia.

Yes, sadly GST is inevitable but at least using drop box shipping, the problems associated with GSP will be avoided and that's a bonus. Can't do much about the stinking GST but at least we can by-pass the stinking GSP.

Avoiding the Global Shipping Program is relatively easy, 4channel. (Or at least, I can affirm that it's been easy for me; the one time I thought "Oh no, am I going to have to have these chairs sent over through the GSP???!", I continued looking - and found a seller locally who had exactly what I wanted in exactly the style and colour that I wanted, at an excellent price, with warranty, with interstate postage extraordinarily reasonable.)

The "drop-box" thing (aka US parcel-forwarding address) is another issue. I have had some difficulties getting items sent to my US parcel-forwarding address on occasion. The difficulties are:

  • some stores in the US will not send to freight-forwarding addresses, and will simply cancel the order;
  • almost every third-party seller on Amazon seems not to be allowed to send to freight-forwarding addresses, even if the item is "fulfillment by Amazon";
  • some stores in the US will only send when the (US) billing address matches the address on file for the credit card being used;
  • by the same token those stores will not allow payment via PayPal unless it is an American PayPal account (not an Australian one);
  • it is always something of a risk to try to bypass these measures by obtaining a virtual prepaid card, so always do a lot of risk assessment if planning to get one of these; and
  • the parcel-forwarder will be responsible for collecting the GST on the cost of both the purchased goods and the shipping cost from them to you in Australia (and all associated costs including insurance).

In summary:

  • will the transaction go through?
  • is your payment method safe?
  • have you taken into account the GST on the total cost (including all shipping fees)?

The US is very keen in having credit/debit card address verifications; it's seen as an important safety measure. Hence the issues with using an Australian c/c while having items posted to a US address.

I think in many cases the first two questions can be satisfactorily met, but the third point is always going to be a factor for buyers. If using a parcel forwarder/shipping company to whom the merchant sent the goods, and that parcel forwarder/shipping company is then going to send the items to you from the US parcel forwarding address, then that parcel forwarder/shipping company must collect the GST amount from you (to be remitted to the ATO).

If you can find sellers selling from their own websites, happy to post directly to you from the US, and not being required to charge GST (because their gross turnover of Australian sales doesn't reach the annual A$75,000 threshold), then you will not be required to pay GST.

But... if a US address is used as a drop-box or parcel forwarding address, GST will be required to be paid, even if you've bought from a small seller with his/her own website, who is not required to charge you GST. You change the game and make GST payable if you use a parcel forwarder.

I don't blame sellers for cancelling if you give them a parcel forwarding address. At one stage I had a lot of problems with the Chinese changing their address to an Australian one in order to bypass my blocks on overseas buyers. I'd cancel their bids/orders every time but they'd come back with a new ID and do it again and again, or there'd be a new one do it.

If I posted an unregistered item to a forwarding address and it got lost between there and China I'd be at risk of a not received claim. I saw that extra leg of the journey as being far more risky than just getting it to another address in Australia and I wasn't prepared to take the risk for the extra distance it had to travel. There was a risk that the parcel forwarding service would lose it, then there was the risk of it getting lost between there and being delivered. If I'd registered it that would have taken most of my profit and they certainly wouldn't have agreed to pay it. I got so sick of them that I stopped listing certain items for quite a while.

That would be because along with your lack of grasp of the English language, or knowledge of board protocols, you seem to have an inability to read. EVERY SINGLE listing that uses the GSP also details the additional costs attendant thereto prior to purchase. Presumably you just bought without reading the not-so-fine print.

You should realise that the AUD is not worth peanuts these days. The hat trick of bushfires, an incompetent government which only cares about profit (aka Budget Surplus™), and now the coronavirus, has lead to the dollar tanking like it's out of fashion. It might be more profitable to hoard Monopoly money these days.

Avoid all items which mention "Customs services and international tracking provided" in the search page, as only GSP items show that message. The postage costs are also very clearly shown underneath the item price. And yes, due to the hopeless Australian dollar, the GSP price has skyrocketed from ~$30 to upwards of $50.

Hi cokeking1907 , Sorry to hear of your issue. Not fair! OK,  the short of it is, is that it is a scam!. It's an arrogantly, rudely inserted middle man that has blown the cost of postage out 4 fold in many cases. It's about as welcome as a rusty nail that has just gone through your foot.

The 2 threads below describe some of my bad experience with this.

Hi totalchaos84.rh-2 and welcome to the board. I'm real sorry to hear of your situation. That's a lot of money. Actually, many people get caught out by this and it's not always that obvious that the item is goiung via the Pitney Bowes GSP (Global Shipping Program). I  sppite of this, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. I have had very good success in asking sellers to please re-list the item with USPS First Class International AirMail shipping for the US and the equivalent for the UK. Most are happy to do so and some have no idea that their items are going via GSP. However, between the time you ask the seller and when they get around to doing it, some keen <e>y<e>d punter may come along and snap!!! that desired item up.

I hope you never get stung like that again. Not nice.

Go well for the future.

The english of the poster you were replying to is fine davewil1964. Just a typo.  Also sometimes, often too for those not too familiar with GSP, they get caught out. We have a whole bunch of folks that have been caught out with it.  And the *beep** out on the  post by totalchaos84.rh-2 was due to that person just speaking from the heart and letting their feelings be known. I can understand where totalchaos84.rh-2's coming from.

BTW: That's a lot of dough to get taken.

I was wondering when you'd turn up with a GSP thread.

How many times have you been told that First Class International is only for parcels under 4lb? An Xbox controller would be way more than that. Therefore, for totalchaos84.rh-2, that comment is useless. Once you hit the next rate, more often than not, GSP is cheaper (not always, but more often than not). You've been told that too, but all you hear is lalalalalala GSP lalalalalala GST lalalalala.

As for the actual postage amount, it would have been there in full view of the buyer, including import taxes. Pointless buying and then whinging about the postage cost, when it slams you in the face. Listings are very obvious when a seller uses GSP. Not only in the listings, but in the search results.

No sympathy for totalchaos84.rh-2.  It was all there on their screen prior to purchase.
