How do I report a seller who gives excellent reviews to his own products using one of his other trading names but the same address.

Not all products can be reviewed, I believe they have to be in eBay's product catalogue first (so stuff like electronics and tech gadgets, media [DVDs, video games, books) and so on).

My last purchase was a video game and there were two reviews on it, which were seen at the very end of the listing - I looked at some current listings for the item and the reviews aren't visible on them (I suppose they haven't used the product catalogue info?), so just as an example of where they are and what they look like...

Edit: because the listing has ended, you'll need to tick "completed listings" in the sidebar to bring it up after using the item number.

I often look at seller feedback but it would be interesting to see reviews of products, although I do agree with the original post that a review by the seller himself is more likely to amount to an ad rather than an all round 'review' as such.

I often go to the site productreview to look at reviews. Anyone associated with a product is not supposed to write a review about it on that site, though they can respond to reviews, and some buyers verify their purchases to the site (with receipts or photos or copies of emails etc) so you'll know it is a genuine buyer.

Whether you agree or not with their comments is another thing. It is a bit like ebay in you have to exercise judgement about how much notice you will take of any particular review.

I LOVE the product review site. I just wish I had used to before my last big purchase. Mind you, it was an impulse buy on Christmas eve, but I was kicking myself afterwards. If I had of checked the site first, I would have known not to  buy it. It shows that even good brands can have dodgy products.

According to the emails I get, I have now helped over 200,000 people with reviews that I've left. I don't know how much truth is in that, but it's nice to know that someone has read them. I've left quite a few reviews, but only the one bad one for that last product. I've had companies reply to my review thanking me, so obviously some of the companies do read them. I don't know how much notice they take of them if they are bad, but at least they read them.

Thanks for the link, stawka, I will go have a look.

Tippy, I've been on productreview since its early days when they used to pay per review.Smiley Happy

I made a tidy bit till they turned to competition entries per review instead, then I won one of their major prizes.Smiley Happy

I think a good review is just as helpful as a bad one.

It was via that site that I discovered via review that a company I had bought vouchers from had just gone into receivership. I was just in the nick of time to get my paypal payment back. So yes, i like the site too & will be interested to read the ebay equivalent, although by the sounds of it, there may not be much about the things I tend to buy.

Re: how do I report a seller who reviews his own items

There aren't many threads on the forum about product reviews and there is some confusion on this thread between Product Reviews (which are fairly new addition to Ebay) and Product Guides, referred to by stawka; hence I've revived this thread.

Product Reviews appear on the Item listing of items with an identifier that exists in the Ebay catalogue. A seller can review their own products, although their review/s won't be from a Verified Buyer.

Here are more details: http://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/product-review
