items listed as free postage but seller asked me to pay postage after I paid?

Hi,

I bought 2 items listed as free postage that includes tracking in the description, and I paid immediately but a few days later the seller messaged me asking if I still wanted them and if I did can I send them another $7.00 for postage!

Is this allowed?

They still have not sent the items either.

Im just a bit confused by this and some help would be appreciated thank you!

I am reposting this question here in discussion boards as I posted it in Q & A and someone asked me to post the item numbers but I cant work out how to reply to them.

the item numbers are  172874753574  and  172874758159.

Thanks in advance.

items listed as free postage but seller asked me to pay postage after I paid?

Hi sticky,

And besides, it does say $7 postage in the listing - there is no way you would have missed that!

You sure you are not just conveniently latching onto the word free - anmd totally chose to ignore the $7 bit about postage?

Many people do that, just find something most convenient in the listing - as it's obviously in their interest to do so .

Obviously this seller expects postage money - otherwise she wouldn't have asked you for it.

And the items you bought are dirt cheap, surely you can pay the postage for them rather than demand seller pay it for you out of her probably negligible "profit"

And forget the silly advice about leaving a neg! That is not how you treat people who are only asking you for something that they are entitled to and is in the listing.

I think you have overlooked a couple of things.

1. In the ad it lists free standard postage then in the text it says $7 for a tracked satchel. Now I've been around ebay for many a long year & seen literally hundreds of ads that mention a dearer postage if you ask for anything above standard. eg express, or for item in the original box etc

So my reading of it would be if you were willing to have standard postage that is free but for a tracked satchel it will cost extra.

That's with me reading the ad and not trying to ignore the $7 bit at all.

2. The item I looked at wasn't dirt cheap. It was $8. I looked at a couple of other sold items (sold to other people, not this buyer) and one was 99c with $7 postage so bingo, exactly the same amount. As a buyer, if I saw that history, I would think-the seller is starting this item dearer in order to cover postage.

Don't get me wrong, I think starting any auction at 99c is a mug's game but the seller has been around the traps way long enough to know the ropes & to have learnt from experience. I believe the seller has seen the buyer has a low score and is trying to coerce them into the tracked satchel, thinking that with any luck they won't know any better. That's not ethical. If they wanted more money, they could have started their auction dearer.

Sticky note, here's what I would do.

I would message the seller and say thanks, but I am happy to go with the free standard postage offered in the ad, rather than the satchel.

If they insist on extra say no, the ad said free postage & that was my understanding, that standard postage was included & it was only if I wanted a special satchel it was extra.

If they don't post & the expected arrival date comes & goes, file an item not received claim.

And yes, neg feedback would be deserved in this case.

As for paying extra. Someone suggested if you want to pay extra, then ask for a refund and a new invoice being issued. If anyone here really believes the seller didn't know how to list standard postage costs in the ad, then what confidence should we have they would know how to cancel & reissue an invoice?

A seller can not ask for more money than the advertised or winning amount.

So the choice is yours.

If you really want them then pay the postage BUT ask the seller to refund your money first and then ask them to send an invoice with the postage costs on it.

OR
You can can tell them to refund your payment as you are not paying for postage as they showed free postage.

If the seller does not help then after the estimated delivery dates open disputes for non receipt of the items and leave neg feedback to warn others the seller wants more money after sales ended.

Looking at the items I can see why they're asking for the extra postage, BUT they are an experienced seller so they shouldn't have advertised the items with free postage in the first place.

Do as sparklz says and try to work it out with the seller one way or another.

The seller shouldn't have asked for more postage - but in both of the descriptions it does say $7 Tracked postage.

All her other listings seem to have postage.

I wonder if she realised that she was advertising them as Fast & Free. Might be worth letting her know that she must put postage costs in the correct place - not in the description.

Seller is well experienced, and I think they knew what they were doing - baiting.

And that's not on.

regardless of what it says in ITEM DESCRIPTION section the POSTAGE SECTION says FREE POSTAGE so I would be holding them to that. let them take it out of their supposed miniscule profit. the OP bought it as free postage and should receive free postage.

items listed as free postage but seller asked me to pay postage after I paid?

Hi fixnwear,

No I genuinely thought that postage was free as it states in the listing.  Ive seen other sellers put in description of what postage services/satchels they use so buyers know what to expect so thats what i thought posting it in a bag with tracking that costs $7.00 meant.

I can see many other listings that are cheap with free postage and I bought these as I thought it was a good deal.

and im not demading anything- Im just asking for someone to help solve this in relation to how ebay works...

Sticky, in a situations like this I wouldn't give (and usually don't) two hoots how "Ebay works."

I pay more attention on how my mind works, what I consider is the right thing to do.

You don't have such a monumental decision to make - it's  a very simple one - you will either pay for postage or you won't.

Me - I have a huge problem,( always had,) in getting anything at someone else's expence - regardless who put what in the listing, or they didn't put, or stuffed it up, made a mistake, even Ebay calling it FREE  click and collect when everyone knows that is not free! None of that matters in the terms of what is right and just.

The only time it matters is when someone is looking for a way out of paying for something, but still expecting to get the items.

Fixnwear, the seller is not a newbie.

They knew exactly what they were doing.   Their other listings have $7 postage, but not these.

I wouldn't pay it.
