ebay dont set the prices, individual sellers do
and the price on auctioned items is actually set by you, the buyer. if you dont want to bid that high dont, but there are obviously buyers out there that value the items higher than you do.
sometimes items may be a bit cheaper down the road at a shop, but not every ebay buyer has the luxury of a shop down the road.
any item is only worth what a buyer will pay, ... so if they are selling for $10, $20 $30 more than you have seen,.... sonmeone obviously thinks they are worth that.
and eBay has no say in what a buyer pays or what a seller asks.

ebay is a venue for sellers to sell through and for buyers to buy through.
It brings buyers and sellers together, it does not set the price of items, that is entirely up to the seller and as a buyer you do not have to use ebay if you can't find a seller with the item you want at a price you are happy to pay.
ebay is not compulsory.

If I went to a very large shopping centre looking for shoes, say.
And if I checked every shoe store in that shopping centre,
you can bet I'd see the same shoes with prices between $60 and $100
You get competition everywhere. You have to know whether it's a good price
or not.
And no-one ever said ebay is cheaper than B & M stores.
It can be, but not always.

I wouldn't really class it as a ripoff, if you want to pay then so be it. That said though when there was flooding where I live people were nocking on doors selling bottles of milk for about $5/L (and bread too) and they actually thought they were doing a good thing.
It cost around 10% for me to sell something on ebay with a featured store and paymnet by paypal. If I sold $10,000 / week that would be $1000 (I sell nothing near that), surely a decent store front wouldn't cost that. Ebay reaches out to a lot of people and while I think the fees are high I still make a little to buy a bowl of rice and maybe some goon.
I think a lot of people would agree that ebay is trying to get bigger business on board while it lasts. On other forums sellers call buyers sheep, I wonder what ebay call sellers. Off to the slaughter I guess.

Unbelievable, talk about shooting the messenger, ebay is only the link between seller and buyer, but we shouldn't even have to explain that to any OP, even a newbie should already know that, well, maybe from school age upward anyway.

I think for a while in the early days, ebay was seen as a site where you might pick up a good buy, but a lot of that was because you might pick up something second hand. And the commission prices were low enough that private sellers could sell things very cheaply, espcially with pick up.
But it is a changing world and a lot of ebay items now are new, so you are going to pay more for that.
It is like any other shopping forum, either a real shop or on the internet, you need to know your prices.
Sometimes sellers here might end up charging more than you could get it for elsewhere. I have seen that happen with new tupperware, where in an auction some buyers bid it up to above the catalogue price. Maybe they do it for convenience, I don't know.
But the bottom line (from my viewpoint) is ebay used to sell mainly second hand things but now has turned around to cater mainly for ebay businesses and new stuff.
Plus there are a lot more deal sites available on the internet now, so it comes down to you, the buyer.
This is a sale site for private people plus businesses, it is not a customer bargain site.

“how the heck is that ebay's fault ?”
.
I remember when all of ebay’s advertising was “PICK UP A BARGIN” … so they established that perception in people’s minds
.
“ebay is only the link between seller and buyer”
.
If ebay are only a “link” then how come they dictate so many rules, charge high commissions and now, outrageously, charge commission on postage/delivery
.
Ebay are driving small sellers and buyers away through there ever increasing charges and rules
.
There was even a challenge at Board Level recently to separate ebay and paypal because it is generally thought that ebay is dragging paypal down
.
Many think that Paypal has the ability to be the best in the world, but are being held back by the perception that ebay has gone downhill in such a big way and has become such a shonky site, so people are less and less trustful of ebay, so accordingly paypal also suffers as people link the two together
.
There is no longer ebay in Japan …. There must have been a real reason for that !and what a loss for ebay that must have been !
.
