It depends on whether the seller offered PayPal. If they didn't, you can't use it unless they send you an independent invoice, which they would not be obliged to do. If they did offer PayPal, there should be nothing stopping you from using it if that is your preference.

There is nothing particularly untrustworthy about Paymate, it is a payment processing system in the same way PayPal is, the key difference is that all payments must be funded by credit/debit card, the accounts don't hold funds (as far as I know), and the protection scheme has a few differences, including a lower maximum payout amount and limitations on the number of claims a buyer is able to make per year.

Your seller only offers Paymate or bank deposit.  Paymate is definitely safer than bank deposit.

Re: paymate, what is it

Paymate was a payment system that started life in Australia where they hoped to compete with Paypal however it never really took off and was eventually bought out by an American company.

It is one of the 3 safe payment options that ebay insist are offered and you should not have purchased if you were not prepared to use Paymate.

The seller is very unlikely to allow you to use Paypal, if they wanted to use it they would have offered it as a payment method.
