Hi there, welcome to the ebay discussion boards.
You're right, it isn't fair if the item was a fake.
It's a pity you didn't come here and ask for assistance prior to returning it, as we could have helped you with what to do. If the item was indeed a fake/counterfeit you could have gotten a refund through paypal (assuming that's the payment method you used) and you would not have had to return it, as it's against Australia Post policy to post fake goods on the grounds that it's against the law to be in possession of them.
If it happens in future come back here and ask for help on what to do.
Also, as of November 1st ebays 30 day money back guarantee took effect which means if an item is significantly not as described you can ask ebay to step in and help in the event that the seller won't refund you or is requiring you to send the goods back at your cost to obtain a refund. Under ebays guarantee, they require the seller to pay for the return & if they refuse to eBay will automatically decide the claim in your favour, & if the seller refuses to refund you ebay itself will and then they will chase the seller to recover their funds.
