That would be the boost in visibility that paying more provides.

They used to be down the bottom; I would be less than happy if I was paying extra to get shown at the bottom.

Yes, we've noticed that too.

They're even up the top when searching "sold" items. It threw me the first time - I thought I'd ticked "completed" instead of "sold"!

It's annoying, but also understandable as the sellers have paid extra to have them shown in a more prominent manner.

Etsy is the same too, and has had sponsored items for a long time.

I'll bet you'd love it if they were YOUR items that you'd agreed to pay extra on for promotion (paid only if/when they sell).

They're at the start and at the end of the page but the category I'm interested in, the sponsored items I'm not even interested in so totally a waste of money for those sellers.

Not sure why you would give ebay even more of your hard earned money lol.

It's not a waste of money for those sellers because they don't pay anything for the ads unless the item sells, and then only if the buyer originally clicked on a sponsored ad and buys the item within 30 days of doing so.

I experimented with a few listings and got extra clicks but no sales. I did sell one of the items but they obviously didn't find it through a sponsored ad because I didn't pay any extra fees.

From what I've seen, a lot of the sponsored ads are not closely related to the buyer's search so they're a waste of space.

As an aside, I put a much lower percentage than what ebay says is the trending rate (that sellers choose) and I still got plenty of impressions (featured on a page that buyers were viewing), but some didn't translate to many clicks, which tells me they probably showed the ads in irrelevant places.

So you don't pay anything until the item sells?

So then you do pay when the item sells plus the fees when the item sells so are sellers willing to pay twice when their items sell?

Like I said previously the items that show in the sponsored part of what I'm interested in don't interest me but perhaps they do interest others.

Still don't like the double dip involved.
