what is the policy for withdrawing/ ending listings prematurely when there are already bids in place

Twice recently, I have been the high bidder on an item, only to have the item withdrawn or the listing end prematurely & without explanation.

The ebay policy is that sellers can end listings up to 12 hours before an auction ends and sellers can also cancel bids up to the very end of the auction.

Until the auction ends the goods for sale are the sellers property, and they can do with them what they please - not withstanding that ebay does not encourage ending auctions early to withdraw goods from sale as it does not create a great buying envirnoment.
