I got curious and had a look at the feedback for that seller.
What I suspect has happened with those 2 buyers (which includes OP) is they were asked to pay extra at the post office because the item was sent with insufficient postage paid. Perhaps in an envelope with $2 or whatever and then it has been picked up by the PO as being too heavy or too wide or whatever to qualify.

Yes, springy, it is possible. I wonder if they might have some casual staff during the holidays, maybe people who are inexperienced, so they have made a mistake with postage?

Yes, that's possible but I think some quite experienced bigger sellers take the risk too. I know a few years back I bought something cheap for a hen's night. Unfortunately it was broken/unusable when it arrived so i took a photo and the seller messaged to say they would resend, which they did, but it didn't arrive in time.
I had written it off and virtually forgotten about it when I got a PO note to say there was a parcel with insufficient postage. I paid it and then was pretty disappointed to wake up what was in the parcel. I didn't bother following it up or anything.
The thing is, the first envelope (about an A4 size) got through no worries whereas the second was picked up by the PO as having insufficient postage.
I suspect that the seller just routinely took the risk because overall, if 80% or more make it through, they probably come out ahead even if they occasionally get called upon to pay the excess.
I am not sure where OP stands with this purchase if that is what happened to him, because he paid the agreed price and he received his item but I agree with him he should not be up for excess postage costs.
Should he have refused to pay the excess and let it go back to sender and just have claimed item not received?
The trouble is, if you buy a few things online, you might not be sure which one you're paying the extra postage for till you are given it over the counter.
What is the procedure in this type of case, can ebay push for a postal refund if a buyer has already paid the extra?
