There is one pictured on pge 183 of Australian Art Pottery 1900-1950 in the Nell Holden section - I have attached a pic. It says the base is inscribed NELL (monogram) HOLDEN / BANKSIA AUSTRALIA - measures 15 x 13. c1945. "Slip-cast glazed earthenware with relief decoration underglaze of banksia seed pod and leaves. "

Looks like you a wonderful find here.

thks SS, I remember seeing it in a book a while ago and thinking how ugly looking it was lol

The one I have is slightly different to the one in the photo though.

The handle is different on mine, and Ive only got three pods on mine at the front with Nell written inside the leaf  and on the base NSW not Australia. also the size is different. The one I have is 10 cm wide and 13 cm tall.

So hav I got a wrong un ? or the original before the mold was made ?

cheers Thks for your info.

Jenny, according to Geoff Ford the signature on yours with Nell (inside the leaf) and Holden was used from 1932-1968.

a similar jug to yours was sold in April last year, same base markings -  Nell inside leaf, Holden, Banksia Australia.  Strange piece, the one that sold, as from the photos, the base looks added and handmade and the body looks cast.

Great find for you.

I would say it's just a version of that jug that Nell made before she started mass producing them using slip casting.

Yours looks to be press moulded (clay pushed by hand into the mould) rather than slip cast.

I could be wrong though as I don't make pottery only collect it.

hiya all, thks for your comments and help much appreciated. Im still looking myself to see if it was one of her first made before the war and the molds were made.

Basically because the base has NSW on it not Australia.

Anyway Cheers
