Classic Art Ware - Debateable origins

I have been thinking about and discussing with various collectors the origins of Classic Art Ware pottery for quite some time now, and since the publication of the 2nd People's Potteries book and the attribution of the label to John Barnard Knight, and subsequently the attribution of some CAW pieces to JBK in an upcoming Australian Pottery auction, I have decided to "go public" in the hope of flushing some information, or at least informative debate out of the woodwork 🙂

As I have said else where, I don't agree with Dorothy Johnstons attribution of this label to John Barnard Knight, a Melbourne potter associated with the label Janet Grey. I, (and others, not having come to this conclusion in isolation, I have talked to various collectors), believe there is a connection with Delamere Art Pottery from Sydney; whether this was a label attached to their wares sold through a certain outlet or a range they sold themselves similarly to Diana's Hollywood or Pate's Regent labels no one is sure.

Anyway - here are some photos for you to see labels on various CAW pieces that have always been attributed to Delamere (except the Koalas which are attributed only to CAW and the frog in the 1st pic which has a Delamere sticker). Aside from this there is continuity of glaze colour, and various motifs common over CAW and Delamere attributed pieces I can post pics of as well if anyone is interested, to support this theory.

Hoping there are some other CAW/Delamere collectors reading who might have info to share

cheers

ah! mine definitely hasn't got that hole at the back - I had to go and pull it out of the cabinet to check - it would have been like me to totally miss it - but no, it isn't there 🙂 They are 2 different vases then, I have another one to find as well lol!

I just had a good look at my vase and it is the one in that bottom photo unless we have identical twins Rae.

It has that blonde tip on the right hand corner plus the sticker and the same leaves and runs between the Koalas fingers. Maybe you should put your one on here Rae for comparison,

Cheers,
Pip

It is yours Pip! I used it because of the sticker, as an example. I wasn't aware there was a difference in number of openings between the 2 sizes.

My ACTUAL ( B-) to prove I have one lol) koala is in posts #10, #169 and the base is in post #194

And here it is again, no sticker though

This is a discussion from the May finds thread I thought I would move over here. Brenton (rosecottagesales) wrote:

Hi Rae, Pip or others
Just wondering, do you ppl have any signed Delamere pieces in your collection?
This topic sort of reminded me of an item I saw during my visit to NSW last month. It was a slip cast figurine with a small koala and a white puppy sitting in between of the tree trunk. The trunk has some small gumleaf/gumnuts very similar to the log vase which Kitty bought. The glaze on the base is yellowish / green and is signed DE.....NO PHOTOS unfortunately.
The koala is quite well made, looks a bit Sydney-ish pottery maker, but the puppy is a bit shoddy looking. Is DE stands for Delamere, just wondering??
Cheers
Brenton

If you look in post #110 Brenton, you will see a large vase with pale glaze and a yellow koala on a log on the front - that piece is signed Delamere, I have had various other signed pieces as well, but never one of the burgundy and green mottled pieces that Dorothy Johnston attributes to Delamere (like Kats log vase), these turn up with the CAW stickers. Given DJ spoke to the Johnston family when writing her book I think her attribution of the mottled pieces is probably correct, but I can't find anyone who has seen one signed or stickered as Delamere other than that big koala vase.

Wrt the piece you refer to - I haven't seen it - perhaps Pip has? I haven't seen anything from Delamere signed DE - always just Delamere or Delamere Art

Kitty-Kat,
You need to use a sniper service. Set and forget! I use auctionstealer and I've never had a problem. There are only 3 free snipes you can use a week, any more you have to buy a subscription, so I never get carried away, and never die guessing at what the actual market price is (No chance of shilling with sniped bids)
