Classic Art Ware - Debateable origins

I have been thinking about and discussing with various collectors the origins of Classic Art Ware pottery for quite some time now, and since the publication of the 2nd People's Potteries book and the attribution of the label to John Barnard Knight, and subsequently the attribution of some CAW pieces to JBK in an upcoming Australian Pottery auction, I have decided to "go public" in the hope of flushing some information, or at least informative debate out of the woodwork 🙂

As I have said else where, I don't agree with Dorothy Johnstons attribution of this label to John Barnard Knight, a Melbourne potter associated with the label Janet Grey. I, (and others, not having come to this conclusion in isolation, I have talked to various collectors), believe there is a connection with Delamere Art Pottery from Sydney; whether this was a label attached to their wares sold through a certain outlet or a range they sold themselves similarly to Diana's Hollywood or Pate's Regent labels no one is sure.

Anyway - here are some photos for you to see labels on various CAW pieces that have always been attributed to Delamere (except the Koalas which are attributed only to CAW and the frog in the 1st pic which has a Delamere sticker). Aside from this there is continuity of glaze colour, and various motifs common over CAW and Delamere attributed pieces I can post pics of as well if anyone is interested, to support this theory.

Hoping there are some other CAW/Delamere collectors reading who might have info to share

cheers
Rae

What happened to the original high bidder, did they not pay or did they decide they didn't like it.
I would be quite happy to have it in our collection but whether or not I bought it would depend on the price.

Yep, you are right 🙂 Very good buying Kat, well done. It is like my kookaburra, made to stand alone. Interesting how all of these different bits keep showing up. They are getting a bit out of range of my pocket on most days, sadly, which I guess would be a good thing if I was selling (which I'm not!)

Yipeeeee,cheers Rae
I thought it was so pretty.
I stumbled across this one,put my max bid in & then changed it LOL,just really liked it.

Yep the prices are creeping up,perhaps because before they were unknowns or were a cheaper range for collectors & no-one apart from you Rae could see the value in them??
Hasn't that changed!

I'm happy to have bought afew bits before the prices got up that bit higher, would have liked to start when you did Rae.
Prices for me with anything depend on how much i like/wont it,have prob payed top $$ acouple off times but its been my choice.

Wilma it was afair bit less than it sold to the nonpayer for but prob higher than you may pay;-):^O]:)
I figured there may not be alot around.

Happy kat

Pip is a more dedicated collector than me Kat, I was really glad to find her though, to give me someone to bounce my obsessive ideas off a while back.

I so rarely even see a piece of Braemore or CAW/Delamere these days - mind you, I have given up going to garage sales altogether, here in Brisbane it is a nightmare - I did drop into one a couple of weeks back quite late in the morning- they said there were more than 10 people waiting in their driveway with bags and torches at 4.30am (for an advertised 6am start), and they were crawling under the garage doors before they could get them up properly. At my age and level of interest I am not going out in the middle of the night in the middle of winter to compete with that!

cheers

You just got shilled like I did a couple of weeks ago.
But it is not such a bad price Kat.
I was the underbidder below you at $63.36 from memory.

You were not being accused of telling stories just being warned by a friend.

Why not add that seller to our serious shill bidders list and keep an eye on them too,
Cheers,
Pip

Hi Wilma,

The vase I have seen before and I think it is by Scott Ceramics from memory...but that plays up at times
Regards,
Pip
