I would assume German stoneware; it may have had a metal lid, which would account for the hole in the handle (where the lid arm would have attached.) Obviously half a litre. If you google "stoneware stein tavern" you will find many similar with tavern scene decoration. There is a whole page of stoneware stein marks here

if you look through you may find something similar to the stamps on the bottom of your mug.

Well no luck on that site and did heaps of googling. Yes i did think there would have been a lid because of the hole. Thanks again for the information
