Old Canvas Map.

Hi, I am looking for any information on old canvas maps. The map I have looks pretty old & the condition is pretty rough where it's been folded. I think from the information on the map it dates back to 1918 but I can't be sure. It's a map of the East Coast of Queensland from Moreton Bay to Sandy Cape.

State schools in victoria were issued with  maps of victoria like yours, ive seen a few with timber ends (made of two pieces with the map-end sandwiched in between, or one piece slotted for the map) .. they hung over blackboards and could be rolled up, or merely hung from the wall. one of the local schools has a number of them, one in particular stands out as it has Australian flora and fauna included as well. the school have ones from the fifties and sixties also, so they were used for a very long time with just materials changing . another i know of hangs in a friends house..it is over a metre in height and almost two across, and is extensive in its detail.. it has "Railways Of Victoria'' in bold across the bottom. i'm of the opinion they were commissioned by state governments for schools, railway stations and other departments.

Thanks for your reply lakeland27, yes they do have timber ends & I have lifted the end timber up to reveal the information I needed, who would have thought, but I am blonde?:^O The information you have given makes a lot of sense & I suppose this one would have been used in the boating/shipping or similiar department? Do you know if they have any value?

Hi lind9650 how are you? 😄 Been ages since I visited ebay but if you are wanting info it's one of the best places to come to, the knowledge of the members is quite incredible really. 🙂 I have tried searching old listings but the antique maps that come up are mainly reproductions, very annoying. Offloading heaps of stuff & researching what some may be worth, the internet has a wealth of knowledge but as we all know, the value of items is only what someone is willing to pay, not always what they are worth. 🙂

OMG 😮 Found the old school maps in completed listings, some of the prices they sold for are more than I expected. The map I have was first printed in London in 1870 & was last reprinted in I think 1928? The survey of the east coast of Queensland was conducted under Captain G.H. Richards http://garylittle.ca/maps-historic/richards.html This is what info I found on him & one of the men in the photo with him did the navigating for the map. Even with the condition of the map it still might be worth a bit? 🙂 The original cost of the map was 4 shillings, probably a lot of money then.

Hello Possum, nice of you to remember me. I'm trying to list as much as I can some days before I go completely blind. Otherwise I'm well. Thank you for asking.

Possum, there are some serious collectors of old maps, especially Australian ones, as there are not to many around anymore. I recently sold an old folded paper Road Map of Queensland and was surprised at the price I got for it.

Times have changed our landscape. More towns, more roads and some of the old towns have even changed names. Historians love to get hold of those old maps, even with blemishes.

Good Luck,

Erica :-x
