I am not a stamp dealer or collector, though I have sold stamps on occasion when they have come with other things. Perhaps I can ask a few questions which will help others more knowledgeable answer you. First is there reason to think you are dealing with a specialist collection โ are the stamps mounted individually in separate albums with descriptions written underneath? Or are the albums just the kind of โworld collectionsโ that we had when we were kids. Are the stamps in the albums generally mint or used? If world stamps, are they generally post World War 2? If Australian are they pre or post decimal? Are the loose stamps on or off paper?
More modern FDCs (especially Australian) can generally be priced through eBay sales, as can the sort of albums / folders and special issues produced by Australia Post. From attending brick & mortar auctions, it is obvious that such collections of modern Australian unused stamps generally sell for far less than face value.
If you are selling albums full of stamps that might be 80 or 100 years old, and potentially valuable, I would not recommend eBay. I have done this and it is VERY frustrating. Buyers want close-up pictures of every page, and if you have these, they then ask questions about individual stamps. You seem to live in Sydney โ we have so many small auction houses these days that sell regularly every month, and who put all their auctions on the Internet. I can think of one who advertises as the North Shore auction house who has several stamp dealers who attend every auction. While the auction house itself would probably have no idea of their actual worth, I can assure you that these dealers scrutinise every page of every album, and that the stamps would have every chance of reaching their true value. This particular auction house always has some stamp entries in their monthly Saturday auction.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along.

thank you for your very instructive reply. I will get the carton out containing the stamps and go through them in order to be able to judge them by the questions you raise. I may post a few enquiries with photos if I think I might have some valuable ones, but it will take a few days to go through the carton

I am a retired Stamp Dealer, so will look forward to seeing what you have when you post some photos.
you say you 'think you may hae some valuable ones'' what are you basing that assumption on? what the original owner paid for them? do you know which Dealers or Local Auction houses the original owner dealt with?

Hi answering on behalf of currarongpete (husband).
We hope 'we have some items of interest!!, let's put it that way! As novices, we are hoping some first day covers might be worth something. The albums, envelopes, small white paper bags: all containing stamps, plus loose ones were all shoved in a carton which the deceased owner's relatives handed to us. They had no interest and therefore we have no idea whether any dealers have looked in the past. Anyway, will put up some photos today and tomorrow of a few. thanks to those who have answered

I will post 7 photos today, I looked into the carton and forgot how many stamps there were. First photo shows just a few of the albums and one large white envelope (one of many) which contain little paper packets of stamps with numbers stamped on the outside of the packets
