a friend commented she'd seen on a collectables tv show that these were of some value. anyone able to shed some light as to value and what these are called - photo books and era?

I agree with you that the cover is attractive. It looks like leatherette, with embossed design to front, blind stamped titles with gilding. Publisher Maison Universelle. While we may think this is a lot of trouble to go to with a souvenir folder, they were actually very common - I mean look at this one
sooo pretty and can't get a bid at $10 (though I wish them luck.) I used to have some similar in my own shop but got rid of them recently - when reduced to half price and still couldn't sell. As I said before, the trouble is that in their originating country, they would have been very common, and people in other countries are not really interested. Unless you have ones with REAL photos, or of some topical interest - like War, Volcanoes, (the Loch Ness Monster would be good.) But if you have free listings, it is always worth a punt at $10-15 - you may catch the eye of someone whose ancestor came from the area for example. (Especially if you can post at Large Letter Rate.)

yes $10 - $15 usually sees these out, unless they have some very unusual or collectable scenes (NOT rivers, churches, roads)
those from Caves, or sometimes unusual Railway or Tramway scenes can sell for a little more.
