only small, slightly rusty, I think its a hair pin like a bobby pin, friend thinks its old sewing related.  anyone in the know please?

I believe it is an older version of a bodkin.....used to thread elastic or cord through a casing.

Hmm maybe, but I was going to plump for a hair grip, perhaps used with curling papers?
