I'm surprised they don't hold these more often. Clearly there's a lot of people out these who are happy to hand them in.

really you should be able to take any unwanted weapon to a police station for disposal, as long as its unloaded and made safe by putting a plastic tie around the trigger.
or by contacting a number for a police collection of the weapon from your home/business at time and date agreed.

Zan - also clearly - there are a hell of a lot of them out there.

Don't think if I were a member of the police force I would be making a date - to go pick up a firearm in someone's home.
That would be a loaded invite.

In Victoria, you can hand in a firearm/ammunition to a police station anytime - you don't need an amnesty.

That is correct, however, there are those who may have acquired a gun illegally, thus during an amnesty, they tend to feel safer handing it in and knowing no questions will be asked/no charges laid etc.
