When veteran ABC broadcaster, Quentin Dempster, says "bye-bye" in his Queensland, boy-from-the-bush way next Friday night, it will be for the last time.

After more than 30 years with the national public broadcaster, Dempster told viewers on Friday night that he plans to go out with a "bang".

"Next Friday will be the final edition of 7.30 NSW," he said.

"I will be leaving the ABC after 30 years to return to the private sector. It has been an honour to work with Australia's great and unique public broadcaster."

The ABC is abolishing local TV current affairs programs including 7.30 NSW.

"I think the ABC is making a big mistake in axing these shows and will have to revisit the deficiency in future years," Dempster said.

Within two hours of ABC managing director Mark Scott's announcement to staff on Monday that 400 jobs would be lost around the country, director of news, Kate Torney, called Dempster into her office to tell him he had no future role at the ABC.

"I will be among 300 staff retrenched in the first round of the ABC's cuts," he said.

.....a fine way to treat a great Aussie journo.....

He is one the countries best journalists. Unfortunatey he is also one of the most vocal against the government and a harsh critic of all governments and their interference in  the ABC.

The CEO is certainly making a hash of things with what he is cutting.

I think he might have been better off cutting some of the fat from other places first before programs, except that wouldn't go with his Agenda of making Abbott look bad.

Still a bloated, left wing spokesgroup and always will be until it is gutted and rebuilt. 5% wasn't a big enough cut.

Goes to show how much you know.

The CEO is a liberal appointee. He is doing what he is doing NOT because he wants to make Abbott look bad but because she is following Abbott direction.

The ABC hasn't has a left leaning CEO since David Hill - the most forward thinking director the organisation had.

and look who seems to be involved....... again

"I got a phone call from a journalist from The Australian asking me whether I thought it was appropriate for Quentin [Dempster] to be chair of the Walkley Board in the context of his criticisms of News Corporation," Mr Warren said.

The abc is bias and has been found to be so.

It is still a flat, bloated organisation that could be run much leaner if it wasnt so job for life

Really? And where is your proof?

And how bizarre that it can still be left winged even though the board is almost exclusively right winged. The CEO is right winged. The heads of departments are also being replaced by right wingers.

What does this tell you?

Every time there is a board change, the government stacks it in order to "make change" and yet every board realises (as Spiegelman does now and Howards then best friend, McDonald did before him) that the so called bias does not exist. They all come in saying they will wipe the left bias out and end spending their time defending the ABC.

What a waste of time, money and energy this is.
